It depends on what you want, and how far you want to go.
The ultimate potential of the 2.5 engine has to be greater, but both Revo and APR appear to be having trouble getting over 500bhp from it,and the 2.0 will easily run that and more currently.

Hi alex i dont want to go crazy spending as much as i did on my s3 ,but the rs3 is a lovely car ,but will defo need some mods to get the best from it..i drove one last week and felt a bit let down ,even with the 335bhp its has on tap , plus it was the first dsg i have driven as i,ve always had manuals...

I would not even have a thought about having golf R over RS3! This V5 is one of the best engines Audi ever produced so far and you dont need much money to get it over 400bhp whilst golf R is basically the same car you had but different shell. Go and get yourself a proper V5 beast and you will love it all day long:]

That makes it an easier choice.....400+bhp on the RS is easy, and not too costly, whereas on the Golf R,you're looking at a BT kit.
Once you get into the 500bhp bracket, things get more difficult,as you're into BT kits or hybrids for the RS,and serious costs, but with a question mark over how much can be had from the RS.

V5?.....I think it's an in-line 5.

How come? I've seen a 750bhp ttrs, same engine no?

i dont think the rs3 is a v5 its a inline 5 and if your going on looks i think the golf looks better but saying that the 2.5 sounds epic and i see more rs3's than golf r's so i think id go and test drive both but the golf r got it on looks

Whhhhhhhaaaattt golf is a munt in comparison.. Just saying ...

Test drove the standard rs3 last week ,was disappointed in the power ,was in a modded golf-r last week ,running about 380bhp ,that was great ..
Hurdy's Golf .:R

Rs3 too smooth not exciting enough... I test drove an s3 and found obviously quicker than mine but very smooth so maybe didn't feel as quick. Mate used to have an escort cosworth pushing 428 bhp and the delivery was so laggy but when it came in my god the pull was incredible

It's always difficult comparing modded with stock, especially as the RS3 is heavier than the Golf R,and down on power compared to the modded car you were in.
Even two cars with equal bhp can feel different according to the mapping, and power/torque delivery.

Looks like the rs3 then ,and revo have a 20% off sale , but i,m hearing good things about the giac maps down at statllers....

Statler get a very good rep, deservedly, and are doing a lot of work right now so you have Revo,APR and whatever Statler are recommending.

Hi alex ,they have a rs3 in this week for a map ,fmic few other bits ,will have to check out ,whats going on,on fb..:) ohh and there mk5 golf rs3 project :)
Statller Golf RS project

There you go.....with determination,a box of spanners and some elbow grease, anything is possible.

How about none of the above?

TTRS anyone? Much nicer looking car in my book!
Golf R the better looker between the two, but not in the same league!

Do you mean the Storm Developments car?...or Pov's TT-RS?

Oh sorry my bad, I confused poverty's TT-RS build title with the APR Stage 3 Audi TTRS video, I meant to say 600bhp.

I wondered if it might be,as both JC's and Pov's cars aren't running that sort of power currently, and despite having a car in the US apparently capable of 600bhp,APR don't seem to have been able to repeat that over here, with either of those cars.....so far....JC's engine is being rebuilt, and a lot of parts remade.
There's a lot of talk and hype, but no substance right now.

I don't see how you can compare the two really?
As Broadster has pointed out, S3 & R20 are on a parallel.
I have ruled RS3 out as I'm too young for an estate (plus no manual option)
With the new shaped A3 out I had considered an R20 as it is still the current model but I'm sticking with the S3 for now.
Id consider a TTRS though as my fiancée uses it most of the time and I could put it in her name(I.e I wouldn't own it) so no shame there.
No point asking others as they don't know what you are looking for from the car.

I'd have an S3 over either to be honest.

If I was spending that kind of cash, i'd be taking my money for a stroll down the road to Harrogate.

I walk past an R quite often and it doesn't have the presence of an RS. I like the dark grey RS at Leeds better tho, despite owning a white car. Lack of power can be fettled to meet your needs (to a degree) but you can't add a 5 cylinder burble to a golf. I would buy the RS in a flash as I love the n o i s e !!!

You need to be making some serious money to run a GT-R. Running costs are about 4x more than an S3/RS3.

I didnt mean to buy and run it only just to buy it :icon_thumright:. Running it is a different story 700 per service every 6 months not to mention tyres and brake pads/discs cost. Would be sweet to own one one day though

A Golf R is essentially an S3 with a Golf plonked on top. I've been in both (S3 and Mk6 Golf) and there is a difference in build quality albeit marginal. The RS is a bespoke package, a specialist car and a Special car. No brainer really...?

EDIT: Kel, buy the RS, put MTMs back on it and sell me the 19" rotors!

RS3 for me, not only being quicker as standard, surely it would sound much nicer than the R as well?

I have bought a Golf R, great car. If you want a 5 cylinder sound track then buy a TT RS.

I agree its just a S3 with a golf body but its much more refined and with the optional ACC a great drive.
