AH Fab / Ebay / Forge S3/A3 FMIC installs (image heavy)

thanks everyone i went back and got the cooler in the end and matched up some bolts, i did get some funny looks though.

right be gentle please as im still trying to get my head around 'vvrrrooommmttssshhhh' (turbo) engines

am i right in saying the two red boxes are where the cooler needs to get to??

coolerpipes1.jpg

if so will my pipes replace these? im using the pipes 'Westy' used, and it does'nt seem like i have enough pipes....

Your pipes won't replace the top two in the box's or a plastic one that runs down the front of the battery but all will become very clear once you go to do it and have the bumper off ;)

thank you :) im just making sure i have it all right in my head before i get half way through and have no car

I doubt you have water meth so I wouldnt worry about it.

You may need a map sensor flange from forge if you havent already got one.I needed one for my golf but im not sure on the s3 setup

Na won't need one on the s3 unless changing the route the pipes take like me and a few others have done but for yours and how most have done the "wellycooler" you'll utilise the oem map sensor tube in front of the battery ;)

Can't imagine it helps but theres no documented proven gains that I know of, although common sense would say that a normal pipe is better than the oem shaped one

Iirc welly is still running the oem map tube and pushing out well over 400bhp ;)

But the forge and ah fab coolers have 51mm tubing and this has 57mm

...the AH v1 has 51mm... v2 is 63mm... while you have a point you asked if this was a suitable alternative to a welly cooler... in context it isn't IMO... compared to the Forge and AH v1 then arguably it is but... seeing as the original reason for 51mm was to aid easy fitment in an OEM style and now there are solutions to use bigger I can't really see why anyone would go smaller now..

The cooler in the link 'should' be ok but you need context... it should be ok for stage 1 and stage 2 but not for stage 2+, hybrids or BT imo...

Try it... but tbh I am past the compromise stage of flow these days... having seen how much small pipework can hurt power and seeing as there are suitable solutions for FMICs on S3's these days I am struggling to suggest going smaller than 60mm... 51mm was in the days there was nothing else out there

If you could get 60/63mm bends welded on its no less deep than the AH v2 but doesn't look like it has the rows or surface area..

Just read through 18 pages and can't find the answer,

What pipe work are people using on AGU's or left handed manifolds to feed the dv and n75. Can't see any reference to those that have done this on an AGU as to the pipe work for the dv or where they've run it froM, on Prawns it looks it a forge cold side dc relocation kit. I'll probably weld on some pipes but just interested as to others

my N75 take off is a 1/8th NPT 6mm brass hose tail Dan, screwed into the pipework and sealed with chemical metal.

I used to run a cold side relocation on the DV, but Niki didn't like it and had the DV take off welded onto the hot side pipework near the turbo outlet

50mm outlets are a bit too small, just go with the 'wellycooler' option, for less £ and better intercooler

This updated V2 AH Fabs FMIC is available now... give AH a call and ask for Lars...( AH Fabrications - Contact Us) pricing is around the £350 mark plus you pipes to join it all together which are now simpler (2 x 63mm 90 deg alloy bends and 2 x 63mm silicon 90 deg elbows plus clips)<tuffty/>

I just want to ask, as the above post isn't quite clear (to me anyway). If I order the V2 from AH Fab, I get everything to fit it onto the car for around £350, so pipes, joiners, clamps and fitting braces etc, is this correct?

I only ask as there's quite a lot of reading in this here topic.

You only get the intercooler mate but you can get all the bits you need from eBay for £60, I have all the pipe work and clamps and that's how much it cost me just need to get my cooler but that will be later on :)

No... the v2 FMIC is around £350 (typically +vat) from what I understand... the pipes are extra and will cost around £100/£130 (depending on what you buy and where you get it from) more on top... not sure what you mean by fitting braces but the V2 comes with brackets... you also need to cut the bumper bar for clearance...

Overall works out cheaper than a Forge FMIC while supporting more horsepower than the Forge..

If you order from AH Fabs, make sure you speak to Lars and request the V2. Otherwise you will get the V1.

I think my FMIC may of arrived this morning :)

Am going down a slightly different route as i have gone far a slightly smaller cooler with a delta fin design still using 63mm outlets and pipework as shown in posts above.

Future is gonna give me a hand fitting as he has already mocked up his FMIC install so hopefully will get a few pics when we do it.

this is the cooler i have opted for High Performance Racing Sport 2.5" 450x230x65mm Front Mount Intercooler deltafin | eBay the one i am getting is an Apexi one as its basically the same but they were out of stock of the gReddy`s

I am not gonna go BT on this car so stage 2 is probably it for me so that cooler should be ample for my needs and a reasonable upgrade to the SMIC`s.

Got the pipework as per the design in this thread to keep the foglights from mrsilicone off ebay and so far am looking at a sub £200 FMIC install :)

I hope you have more success with a smaller core then me. Mine was a fair bit smaller but run along side one of the original side mounts and it just wasn't up to the job of stage 1 let alone stage 2 but I wanted to see if my idea would work. It's good to see people willing to try different things, so hats off to you Bob.

You can read about my FMIC fitting here:

Cheers Westy,

yeah willing to have ago and see what happens as hopefully the deltafin design of this cooler will aid it and allow me to run smaller dimensions and still provide adequate IAT`s.

I had a brief run through this thread yesterday looking a t the evolution of the FMIC`s since Tuffty`s first stab at it with the tiny little cooler and small outlets. So i think i have found a viable package for my needs and also budget lol.

Obvioulsy only time will tell (and of course some logging) :)

Will check out your thread now bud cheers

*Edit* Out of interest what size was that cooler you ran with one SMIC?

Yup fingers crossed its gonna be ok i think it will but am not very clever with this sort of stuff.

Cheers Karl yeah for what i want i think it should be all good plus easier to fit as its on the smaller side and keeping my fogs OEM looking.

Hopefully the delta fin design aids the design a bit allowing better coolinmg on a smaller core.
