Does stretching cause tyres too wear?

Bit of a silly question really but have just failed my MOT on all 4 tyres being bald on inside of tyre.
I have had them on for just over a year now...Falkens 215/35/19 on my speed lines. Had no idea they were bald otherwise wouldn't of put it through its MOT. Has the stretching caused the tyres too wear? If so what can stop it from happening? Could I go for a bigger size rim and raise suspension but will it then look like a monster truck?

As above plus stretching is going to equal uneven wear.
 
Im glad it failed, stretching is dangerous. Get the correct size wheel/tyre combo on there and the tracking checked.

I did think that MOT stations were supposed to fail for excessive stretch and insufficient arch clearance now anyway
 
a bit of stretch looks good in my opionion :) but i can see it would cause just the inside to wear..
 
So looks like when I order some more tyres I will have too sort out the tracking and camber then. Thought I would get an answer from you N8, cheers.

Alignment on Audis always seems to be a problem , especially on the Quattros which seem to need it sorting every 5000 miles or so.

Well worth doing it as the car feels and handles so much better and the tyres last a bit longer.
 
Stretch wont cause inner edge wear, why would it? Its toe out that causes inner wear, typically when lowered and not aligned after. Excessive camber will typically cause wear, but not as badly as incorrect toe.

That said, my last front tyres were not really stretched (225 on a 8.5) and I had the alignment done after lowering and my inner edges have still worn more quickly than the rest of the tyre... go figure!

For anyone that says stretch is dangerous I think that's a very broad statement. Stupid amounts of stretch might be 'more dangerous' than correct spec, but I don't think I have ever read a thread on crashes caused by stretch?

get the correct tyre for the correct rim. Then you will not have problems :busted_cop:

got nothing to do with toe in/toe out, its camber. camber is the wheel looking from above and toe in/toe out is looking from the front. Toe in / out will cause feathering on the tyre wear.

Negative Camber will cause inner tyre wear and as for the opposite, possitive camber will cause outer tyre wear.

Streching of the tyre as said will cause uneven tyre wear.

Seeing as your car is lowered it will need tracking doing as lowering a car will put the tracking out.
 
Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see any reason why (on a properly aligned car) a stretched tyre will wear unevenly.
The only reason would be with the ridiculous levels of camber that some people use,resulting in the car riding on the inner section of the tread.
Other than that,as you've said,there shouldn't be a reason for excess wear other than poor alignment.

Too be honest it's my own fault as I have found out due too the comments, when I adjusted the lowering on the specific size alloys I clearly didn't get the tracking and camber altered. But I believe they are the correct size tyres for the alloys, albeit there stretched...as I read somewhere that if I went for any bigger size tyres they would of caused rubbing on arches.

A costly mistake that I will not make again, looks like its standard alloys for the time being ha!
 
streched tyres do not allow the flexibility wheels need when cornering, therfor wearing unevenly.

I'm running 215's on a 8.5J and 'm getting wear on the inside of my front tyres (rears are fine) can the camber be adjusted on the front?
