im swapping a car, and need to transfer the number plate... now iv read this Transferring a registration mark and how to apply : Directgov - Motoring

all seems ok, but will this interfere with the registration process, or would it be better to wait until we both got the updated logbooks through.... I really cant get my head around DVLA form sometimes

Advice would be very much appreciated for those who have done it before

Thanks

You are better sending both log books off and they will transfer it for you. For a fee of course which I think was 80 quid last time I did it. They will also send you new tax discs and MOTs if required.

It only took them a week last time I did it

If you live near a DVLA office you can actually take the form and V5 in and they will check it all over for you. Just saves making any mistakes

This really. If you have both cars, then it's just £80 to transfer from one car to the other, they must both be at the same address and same owners.

If different address/owners, you need to retain the plate first.

oh........

just when i was confident, you have now ruined it.

Basically im changing my car for an A3 tdi, and the owner of the A3 is having my S3. My s3 has a private plate... so i was thinking we could both fill out our log books... Then both fill out the Application to tranfer reg number form (V317), send them all off together with MOT's but keep each others slips... Then I presumed the DVLA would send me the new logbook, MOT and tax disc with the new reg, and send the new owner of the S3 the logbook with its previous reg... Is this not the case?

here is the form: http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consu...n/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_069390.pdf

at the bottom of section 2 it says above the signature box : 'I declare that I am, or i am about to become, the registered keeper of this vehicle.....'. This says to me that you can do what im proposing?

You can do the transfer to the new reg and new keeper at the same time, but not sure if you can do it by post. The thing is, you need to have both logbooks sent to your address, then resend the logbook with the new reg to the new keeper. The car your are taking your private reg off needs to be assigned a new reg, so unsure if you can take the private reg off and change to new keeper at the same time?

Yeah i see what you're saying, i'll give the DVLA a call tomorrow to double check and will report back

Spoke to the welsh and they confirmed what I said, just fill out both log books to change owners, fill out the form in the manor that you have swapped cars, and send them together, only thing is it needs to be sent to the local office, rather than Swansea. Ideal!
