been looking for a decent cheap a4 tdi so i can take our disco off the road for a mass welding session it needs.

been emailing him last few days off and on. turns highest bidder was a plank apparently.
might be picking it up on sunday if i can get a lift down.

what do you think?

well the lift is coming from my dad, assuming im happy with what i see when i get down there (doubtful as im very knowledgable on these cars) this will be the fist "a" prefix audi ive actually owned lol!

I sold a 110BHP AFN avant 2 weeks ago for £850 with 1 year Mot and 6 months tax. It was high mileage but as good as it gets, full cambelt kit and aux. belt tensioner + belts fitted last summer and brand new clutch a few weeks ago. It sold 3 hours after being advertised on Gumtree...
Been offered this T reg saloon for £350, needs a clutch and flywheel the ownere said...eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace
Pretty tidy car with full service history and tax and Mot. I have a clutch, rear discs + pads and 2x bearing kits lying about in my shed, need to pull my finger out and fix-it ! very nice "lifestyle" colour as well !

that is nice and green! for me tho, its more green than nice!
looks like a brill little project tho.

this one ive bought, he thinks the cambelts due. he has bought a new belt kit but hasnt done it yet (belt kit is coming with the car). he also said the front tyres will need replacing soon.
when i spoke to him yesterday he said he was going to get it valeted!

think these old a4 tdi's are awesome value for what they are.

Yeah, i agree, what car can you say is cheap, economic(50-60 mpg+ !!! ) and reliable in the same sentence ?

Did you sell fjtwelve's highly tuned but somewhat troubled 51 avant?

Nope, it's still a work in progress. I have rebuilt the engine, ported the heads, fitted a gtb2260Vk turbo, balanced the injectors (still not entirely happy with them as they are fitted in the wrong boddies-race 683 were designed for early 150 Bhp AFB engines !), fitted Eibach pro springs and genuine sachs sports shocks (to get rid of the soft Koni FSD's !), rs6 rear antiroll bar and bushes and few more bits and bobs ! Need to get acustom tune and a 3 Bar map sensor fitted then it's good to go. Hope to have-it running well till Worthersee next month but i don't have much time so maybe i'll take either the allroad or b6 tdi to Austria ! Here'a how it stands now on fat5 alloys Smokey:

well i think my (soon to be if its ok when i see it) a4 will be staying near standard.

it will get treated to a set of these tho.
Audi A4 Tyre Only! (Goodyear 205/55R16) | eBay
as they look best on a4s.

plus a t sport steering wheel if i can find one.
AUdi A4 AudiSport Leather Steering Wheel & Airbag | eBay

hang on this is where the modifying sh1t starts isnt it??

i dont want to get into this, i need to do all the welding on the landrover in time to sell this a4 with a full test in october before the excisting tax runs out.
but hopefully our lass (who will be primarily driving it) really likes this a4 and gives her blessing to sell the landrover as the scrap box it is without me having to fix it!

I am happy to see the Avant still alive! Probably the ultimate Evo! I have a 2.5 tdi and love it - although after reading all the posts on the Axk engine I am wondering when it will blow up on a spectacular fashion. My version is the Quattro saloon - it has what looks like a 'sport' steering wheel - what that a standard spec on the q? Was there a sport version of the tdi?

There was a Sport and SE version and trust me, them engines will take a good beating without complaining too much. They let go when there's too much wear on the top ends but that's reasonably easy to sort out with aftermarket parts. Their biggest enemy is the Longlife servicing, whoever thought of that ideea needs to be shoot on the spot ! Don't worry too much about breaking it yet, just drive it and service-it with quality oil once a year and it should last you a long time !
Sorry murran for hi jacking the thread !

I have a few more parts to fit to it, b7 rs4 front brakes, b5 rs4 rear caliper + discs, Eibach 32mm front antiroll bar and s4 solid track rod ends. Handling wise is nearly there but i feel that i should take the engine and swapp it to a b5 or b6 chassis as the c5 a6 quattro is too heavy for performance thrills. Been offered a nice rs4 shell without running gear and interior but it's too expensive for what i will use it for + a rs4 shell with a diesel engine would be a sacrilege in my oppinion !
I am still tempted to sell the avant and call it a day + start with a new platform all over again ! Had a b6 tdi 180 Bhp quattro a few weeks ago and i also have a b6 FWD Tdi 163 bhp fitted with all bells and wistles, i had an ideea to swap the quattro running gear into the FWD and have a late EURO4 motor with quattro and low insurance and tax. Not many would realise the diference and i tend to keep my cars for a few years anyway... Sadly a friend came allong and offered me good money for the quattro so the ideea has gone and sold the quattro !
Still happy with the b6 FWD though and the only issue is my missus, all the cars i like and work on she cannot really drive them as they are too hardcore ! Don't wanna keep too many cars as it's dead money + tax and running costs are high these days + i buy and sell cars so i have runabouts every day !
I really wanna go along with the b5 1.9 Tdi quattro project, i have the shell with no lump (used to be a highly strung v6 tdi in there) and the built AHH engine but no time to put toghether. That would be fun to drive as the chassis is fully sorted + the engine is running an estimate 220 Bhp whilst still returning 50 Mpg !
Couple that with hard H&R antiroll bars, 4 pot caliper & 330 mm brakes, rs4 rear diff and brakes, rs4 shocks and eibach springs all round + nice Bose/leather/double DIN and full s4 bodykit and it's quite nice to look at it as well...that would be my ideal runabout as i would get the a6 for long motorway trips.

well that didnt go well. i suspect it'll be back on ebay in a bit.....

BUT...... anyone thinking of bidding on it please note......
for starters its an ahu 90bhp. not a 110 at all!
the clutch is very nearly knackard, very high and it smells of ****** clutch under the bonnet.
the o/s/r brake caliper is p1ssing brake fluid out.
theres quite a bad engine oil leak (actual dripping) from the front edge of the sump/front crank seal area.
it needs 4 tyres on it not just the two stated in the ad. 3 of them are illegal, 1 of which i wouldnt be comfortable even driving it on!
he hasnt got a cambelt kit, just the aux belts. the aux. belt tensioner unit is also worn to the extent that the pulley is no longer in line.

the guy wouldnt come down to 650. even tho i pointed everything out and if he was honest about its condition on the ebay listing then it would struggle to get even 500.
he said he didnt know about the faults and the clutch seemed fine. so i told him i was an mot tester and he can now concider himself informed!

i was proper annoyed in the car on the way back.

im not the first person to waste my afternoon going to look at a car thats not as described, im sure i wont be the last!

Well, that;s the beauty of buying 2nd hand cars ! I have seen a few in my time, when you realised you wasted your day looking for cars it get's quite bitter !

cant complain at £620! with test and short tax, bargain? dunno, not seen it yet!

Looks decent. Expect low Mpg and a noisy engine if driven over 80 Mph ! I don't know why they fitted that small, aging engine to the a4, had 1 in a passat saloon (one of missus's first car as was low insurance!) and that was horible to drive on motorway and liked a drink !
At the time i was driving a tuned b5 v6 tdi quattro which was 20 Mpg better of fuel driving steady at 80-100 Mph !

I guess they sell them for the same reason they sell 1.0L Corsas, people buy them!

It'll probably be quicker and use less fuel than the landrover too :p

Yeah i agree but a 1.8 NA or Turbo will be better on fuel without having to work the engine that much and came better kitted out as well !

ive driven the 1.6s at work. while they are slow in a special way, i dont think theyre a bad engine.
granted the a4 is a bit on the heavy side for it, but running about round town and dropping the kids off at school etc. only something with a v8 in it would be worse on fuel than the disco.
its cheaper on insurance than the 110 diesel i was after.

plus our lass likes the colour so thats 3/4s of the battle won in getting her out of the disco!

Yeah i agree but a 1.8 NA or Turbo will be better on fuel without having to work the engine that much and came better kitted out as well !

surely if its an "se" whether a 1.6 or a 20v it will come with the same kit?
i can see in the pics it hasnt got aircon but as its a 1.6 i can only see that as a good point...... not having the aircon pump sapping what little power there is available...... lol.
