Facelift Dumbo Mirrors Fitted - Guide

i basically would need it for a day to do installs on my car. but would want to come back now and then on future installs i do. needless to say i would be happy to pay the garage back with some of my expertise on the Audi's if they needed any help.
it does need to be a big garage and i dont need any tools. just somewhere i can work on the car indoors without the rain and cold.

If you don't get any luck and wanna get in somewhere, you can use our installation bay. It's a bit far (Bournemouth) but I've got no problem with that. That's if you fancy a bit of a drive. Lol.

thanks mate, i will keep this in mind. it is a long drive but who doesnt like to go to the beach :)

Hi itwasntme, just quick question. At the moment i dont have folding mirrors, however if i buy the folding units and mirror switch, is it a case of swapping mirrors and replacing interior switch with new one and coding to get them working. This is folding when pressing switch as oem.

not necessarily as on mine i got the folding mirrors and then found out that i need to change my door modules as they dont support folding. check to see what door modules you already have in the car as some dont support power folding.

if you do have the correct module then your car then yes you just install the mirror housing and then install the switch and code the car.

if you are getting the prefacelift mirrors then you would need the prefacelift module which is 8P0 959 801 G (drivers side) and 8P0 959 802 G (passenger side), there may be others that work but my ones which end in H do not work

if you are getting facelift mirrors with indicators then you would need the facelift door modules, as far as i know its the ones ending in J, M and P that work

Cheers Itwasntme, yeh i'm just looking to upgrade existing mirrors so prefacelift. The facelift ones look bigger but i like the smaller mirrors better.

Thanks Itwasntme, yeh but i think they will more expensive, plus i would have to start moving the indicator to mirrors. I just wanted the simple solution of what it would have come with if ordered from factory. lol just wanted the folding function coz at the moment i have to manually fold/unfold them and if i dont its guaranteed to be hanging off when you come back to the car where i live! lol Unfotunately i have the H modules too so will have to source new ones.

well just get your hands on a set of pre-facelift power folding ones and a door module that support the power folding and then go from there.
as for expensive i got my power folding dumbos and auto dimming glass all in for under £150 :)

Yeah & sold under false premise "and folding mirrors when lock car"

lol i saw that...
Nigel since you are here can you help out with the relay that is needed to get the folding mirrors when locking the car.
on the below diagram i am not sure which wires i would need to connect the relay to on the right and left side that is labelled 5 and 6?

The circuit design from what I can briefly see, of german site, relies on microswitches inside the mirrors for positions, but the mirrors dont have microswitches at all, also would be very diffficult to reliably install some aswell inside such a cramped area, already been down this road, the present way it recognises the stop position is via resistance on the current circuit as far as I can tell, as it only uses a 2 wire reverse polarity system for the folding actions, all other wires are used for other systems non related.

I designed a completely different circuit for the job which would include full closure aswell, tested but havnt had time to build the pcb's, also got several other designs to test to make it 1st less costly & second easier to fit.

Bottom line is its not codable via vcds on the 8P, you cant tap into existing folding switch & it does require a load of wiring.

right so then the microswitch part is not needed.
the unit you designed is not ready otherwise i would have just got the parts from you.
i know its not a code-able function but was wondering if i could trick the unit to fold on lock
from what i understand on the diagram that has been used on older cars is that it uses the folding mirror wires (pins 8 and 16 on mirror plug) for the fold signal and the safe lock wire to trigger the fold action so it folds when the car is locked/unlocked. should this not work in theory?

I'll have to study it more tomorrow as havnt had a thorough look at it as yet.

I suggest you order & have a tinkle to see if you find anything new missed by others, I've not been about for a while for family reasons, so have a rather large inbox to get through tomorrow onwards, so will look at it when on a break :)

no probs mate. was just a little confused with the microswitch thing. but you already said that the newer mirrors dont have these. now i need to find the right 'safe lock' wire so i can tap onto that and see if i can get this working. going to be re-pinning all the door modules anyway since i have now picked up the facelift P rev door module so i can get the power folding dumbos and the chrome facelift window switches working as per oem.

What an excellent write up, Ash! Hat's off to you, you've done a great job. Looking forward to reading more  xx

Great write up, I changed one of my folding mirrors and had to take the door frame and glass out as the wiring was clipped onto it and I couldn't free it. I like the idea of taking the pins out of the connector, may have saved me a load of work.

Its good to see well written write ups with clear photos, really useful for anyone else contemplating the same upgrade. :salute:

This is the correct method & easiest overall so you did it right, given as you stated the plastic white retainers are pushed into the door top chassis & the new ones need this aswell so to keep any loom free of the glass etc mechanisms, I've done it both ways & the oem route is far better method.

yes the door frame and glass out is the right way to do it but i wasnt really bothered in taking up so long to do it plus it was freezing!
the mirrors are working perfectly and no issues with it touching the glass so im still happy.

It takes less time than you think to do it the right way, less than the other way going from experience, its all the little things that add up the time.

ok so i did the door module change over to the facelift P rev ones and i have to say repinning those connectors is very annoying. anyway all done now and i have the power folding mirrors working and the auto dimming wing mirrors which work really good!

A big thanks to mikex709 for his help and generously giving me somewhere to work
got some more mods to work on tomorrow so should have a few more updates....

also have ordered the relay so when that comes i will try to see if i can get the mirrors to fold on lock from keyfob

Check your tilt sensor button & interior sensor button on drivers door edge.

what should i be checking for nigel?

also after the upgrade i got these errors that dont clear

Check they turn on/off when pressed.

ok no probs, willl check that tomorrow.

do you have an idea why i am getting that error? i wired up the module as per elsa and the locks are working fine.
this has confused me

Check the relevant wiring for the motor codes stated, should lead you to the fault & your coding doesnt look right.

ok so i double checked the coding and i turned on the safe inactive feature and then the error went. i then checked the wiring on the car and all looks as per Elsa so thats all good. so i turned off the safe inactive and the error didnt come back so its all good :)

waiting for the relay to turn up and then im going to be dong that and see where i go with that...

Glad you got it coding sorted. It was fun giving you a hand and gaining experience from someone who knows their stuff. I'm glad we finally got your rear view camera working last night considering the amount of times i had to resolder the connections, lol. I do like the the power folding mirrors and chrome finish switched, makes your ride up to date. Its something i will do in the near future, so i will be asking you for some assistance :)
