Hi Peeps,

Really been bugging me lately (since the suns come out especially)

Basically there is dust inside my Cluster (DIS) & was wondering does anyone else suffer with this problem or is it something i should be moaning at Audi about...

To me it looks like where the pins are to reset the trip meter & time that dust has gone through the hole (surrounding the pin) and now is just there & tbh it looks like *****! even had few people say "that aint very good"

now im absolutle pants when it comes to D.I.Y in cars & ive sat and thought about it many times over the last week but i wouldnt even know where to begin with disassembling it all... I know there was a thread somewhere & somebody had taken there cluster out to rotary polish the plastic cover to get all the scratches out which mine also needs!!

is it hard to remove the cluster? can you even take the plastic front sreen off it to get inside? or is it a case of a new one??

so any pointers would be great and as always thanks in advance!!

Take the clocks out and split them in half to get to the inside of the glass.

1st release the wheel adjuster under the column, pulling the wheel towards you and down as low as it goes towards you knees. Put towards you the trim under the clocks, it just unclips. This will reveal two bolts. Remove these and work the clocks out, releasing the single multi-plug on the back.

thanks Khufu... What will happen when we unplug the multi-plug?? will i have to reset anything? im guessing some megs scratch x will work on the plastic screen?

The current trip stats will be lost but thats about it!

Just be careful not to knock the needles as they're a pita to realign.

^ that's about the only thing I DO know about this - you'll need something like Meg's Plast-X for the plastic....scratch X will create more

yeah you dont want anything with any sort of cut in it , as it will make it about 100 times worse than you started scratch city

it mentions disconnecting the battery there.. is that safe to do on a Remapped car?? who can i get to machine polish that small bit of plastic

Hmm, Its most diys always mention to disconnect the battery when carrying out pretty much any sort of work on a vehicle. Not sure on the map part but i have a dodo juice machine polisher although i have never attempted something like this lol. If your down at ace we can give it a go with a bit of plastx on a finishing spot pad

Thanks for the offer dude but i think id rather not do it in the middle of aces car park... i can see it going terribly wrong... Lets just say im not very confident when it comes to pulling my car apart lol! i can imagine people being everywhere and panicking when its all apart.. not my cup of tea. Although im a tight ******* im also the type who likes to pay for things to be done so i dont have to worry! haha

ahahaha dont worry im the same im scared to fit anything in this car incase things start rattling or clips break!!

Yer probably not a great idea, It does look fairly straight forward to do but maybe find out about your remap settings and stuff before attempting to remove anything.

The map will still be there after a battery disconnect. It's flashed to the ECU so is permanent until copied over.
The only thing that will reset is the ECU's learned data/values.... i.e. how you drive etc.
But this will be re-learnt over time.

it might even be faster once re-worked as the car has been driven very softly for about three months due to not having a clutch..

That's what happens with mine (unmapped though). Livens it up nicely.

You will get some warning lights like the steering light & ABS light. IIRC you'd need to drive car in a straight line for a few yards & then do a slow lock to lock to put the steering light out & drive the car over 10(?) mph to put ABS light out.

If its just dust, surely a can of compressed air would be fine? If there was scratches they would be on the outside & you wouldnt need to pull it apart?

well considering this thread went 5 months without a reply ive done quite well today.. You lazy b*stards

oh and i just removed the trim above the steering column and i fell at the 1st hurdle.. cant get it back in properly the leather keeps creasing up however i did manage to reveal the two bolts.
