HELP! New MAF now = crazy overboost and backfire through inlet!

Point to point, considering the work, I'd be mortified if it wernt quicker :p mainly due to weight / brakes more than anything.

Meh. who cares, so long as we enjoy them :D

Will try and test maf tonight, but it's raining, and my lack of haldex prevents wet weather fun :(

Yeah point to point in the wet might be a different story ;)

I've had bad experiences with sensors from ECP before so anything elextrical I get from Audi.

You'd better not tell Plunky that your new MAF might blow his car up shhhhh ;)

Too late as i have already read this thread! :)

All this talk about only buy one from the dealers is rubbish, i got a "cheaper" one from ECP and its been fine (touch wood), 230 odd quid for a MAF is ridiculous!

Well maybe Nick is just unlucky then?! Maybe you should buy the MAF and take the money off Nick and that way it might work :)

Balls..... curiosity got the better of me and i've just been out to have a look at mine.... 4 wires :keule:

wish i had known how dear they were before i started hacking it to bits and descreening it lol.... ahwell it's fine at the moment,,,,, touch wood

I bought a bosch item from ECP and never had an issue.
They offered me a cheaper one or a Bosch item.
I went with bosch and... works fine .

Why is the MAF for your car so expensive Nick? I thought they was all £80 exchange from VAG??

Anyways, I don't buy into the 'buy it from dealer only', I got just the sensor part for my Passat TDI from my local motor factors for £56 allin, still good after 60k miles.

They're all £80 exchange from GSF or ECP Jojo, like they are from audi for later cars.

Problem is, there arn't that many AGU's still knocking about needing MAF's, so audi have stopped doing the MAF's on exchange :( and it's outright sale special order only! £231 from TPS (who supply audi)

Latest update folks:

Put in new MAF number 4 this evening, and it's the same as MAF's 1 and 2 from GSF, SLIGHTLY more boost than my original one, but only 1-2psi at most.

MAF 3 was clearly fecked, as it caused horrific overboost, lean backfire, and had G/s readings that were about 60% of what they should be.

MAF's 1, 2, and 4 have all done the exact same thing, I'm getting 1-2 psi more than my current maf, and the same 187g/s peak figures.

4k figures (random point once it's fully on boost) are around 140g/s again, just like my old maf.

I don't get it folks, 4 mafs and it's not right still, yet with Plunkys maf plugged in it felt exactly like the day it was mapped.

I think I need to try and get Liam on side again for another test, and make sure it wasn't coincidence.

Getting SERIOUSLY fed up now.

Roll on a bigger turbo, if funds will ever allow.....

Your not having no luck with theses MAF's.

I know the MAF has been said that this is the reason for your problems but it could be a good idea to try the MAF on you Plunkys car as you said its the same engine with the same mods ini.

If it works on his then maybe something needs to be looked at your car.

Just a suggestion

I think you're right Nattie, we've tried Liams MAF in my car and it's awesome, but at the time we didn't have the time to try my MAF in his car.

I think I need to try his MAF in mine again, and IF that restores the performance, we'll need to test and see if either of my MAF's cause his to give lower boost.

****** thing. I'm fed up with it. it's quick -ISH at the 16psi it's currently running, but I KNOW there's another 20bhp or so hiding in there to get it back to where it should be.

meh.

SHould have bought an S3

Ye I know how you feel. You know something isnt right with the car but cannot pin point exactly whats wrong with it even when It looks obvious.

Id keep the MAF you got now and try it on Plunkys before you decide to take it back if you was going to.

I don't mean it :p obviously. It's just that you tend to get less problems when you get a more basic car ;) so an S3 would surely be better? haha.

Meeting plunky tomorrow lunchtime for a bit of maf swappage. I WILL get to the bottom of this tomorrow. WIll log everything, and go straight back to ECP if needs be for a refund.

Something is already in the pipe line for this..... Although I am not at liberty to say (Dane- Shhhhhhhhhhh)

haha.....:racer:

Did the new maf sort this prawn?
Having similar backfiring through the inlet on my leon
MAF was under reading by 20-30g/s so used the one off the s3 i broke and it went back to 200g/s (Only OE map)
After a week it was on the track and started boosting to circa 20psi
It doesnt feel fast and seems to start to boost then hesitate they fly up, but doesnt surge and drop like your vid
It only seems to back fire if floored in the lower gears (1st+2nd)
Sound familiar?

Just had a look and the original taken from the leon is an 049 but the replacement i took from the S3 is an 040
I think may have answered the question, are these maf's scaled differently or read differently?

yes... Not compatible.. ones wideband ones narrowband...

you MUST check and not just install willy nilly

thats why I posted the numbers... Expecting you to confirm you had fitted an 040 into your LCR = Wrong.
