I'd define it as significant line changes imho, I mean my10 had a gotta changes even the door handles are different

I'm not confused by it, I'm confused by people that think there's a need for it, and clearly some people are confused by it.
Without wishing to sound like a broken record, doesn't the fact that people think there's a need for it, AND actually use it, imply that there's a need for it?
People are confused by many things but that doesn't mean those things shouldn't be there in the first place.

cheers lads! i am a new member (joined today) looking to buy a new black edition 170 bhp sportback in lava grey...just learnt heaps about the different years etc.
im really annoyed at the exhaust issue on the diesels, i dont know if my car will have 1 or 2! thats the only thing holding me back from ordering the car.

Dont get that at all, how are the exhaust tips going to hold you back buying a car, if you dont like then add a double tip or change the backbox, it really is that simple.

That will be an 8P2 then but still need the model to find the engine code... Petrol or Diesel, capacity etc..
Check the front of your service book, also that info supplied wont help allot, doesnt denote fuel type, engine size, gearbox etc, just check inside the SB.

Well, I know that the first 2 everyone is fighting about is actually called 8P1 and 8PA look it up, its true.
I think the newer is called 8PB.
How can you not know this? Has nobody see wiki or googled it?

Well, yes I did. And it is because everyone is unaware(of the real names) and so made up names to compensate. Hence, I wanted to share what it is really called.
So if I say 8PA you will say 8P2. on other sites u will say 2009> and they will say, o ok, u mean 8PA.

This is the most pointless and ridiculous thread I have ever read on any forum (yes, I get that this thread is old). Isn't a forum generally used by enthusiasts, therefore shouldn't we actually know/learn the correct designations. How is making up a series of model numbers like 8P1, 8P2, 8P3 etc any less confusing for those already having trouble with it, any better than actually teaching people the correct terms such as 8P1, 8PA etc. If those people look elsewhere for information or parts information this stupid internal forum naming system is not used they are even more confused than before. The mind honestly boggles that anyone would feel a need for this.

Have you even read the whole thread? The 8P1, 8P2, 8P3 system was proposed as an "internal forum" system to supposedly help people who didn't know the difference between 8P models. Go into Audi and ask them about the A3 8P3 and see how far you get!
Ok so you go into sites like Eibach, ebay H+R Bilstein to name but a few and they all use these codes, ok there not official audi but they are used in general consensus.Legit numbers? Are you sure about that?!
I think you are talking about part numbers, many part numbers begin with 8P....., that's different. The original thread is talking about the A3 8P model and different versions of it.
