DIY heat shield - for under £20

How did you cut the hole for the MAF meter housing?

With difficulty. Basically drilled two large holes next to each other to get the tin snips in, then lots of little snips later and you get a nice MAF sized hole. It's a ball ache but you get there in the end.
 
Good effort mate - did something very similar a good few years ago when I had my 8L

hmmm. oh well you tried.
just curious how I can get the 3inch tip to fit OE airbox.. Fiddly job that it was compared to using a JR fiter (trimming was required to both silicon bends but it worked.)

Thanks :). I am just about to invest in a pack of Tin Snips, R/H, L/H & Straight. I found a guide on the internet for cutting round holes in ducting which has been very useful.

It would have fitted for sure but like you say, I'd have to trim both hoses and I didn't want to make a mess of the TIP or risk compromising its performance. It's fine though, I've sold the Neuspeed on and I look forward to making my own custom shield in a couple of weeks. It's currently secured using the eyelet for the OE cold cold air feed :).
 
i could knock some of these out, as im a CNC Laser operator ;)
 
Here's my attempt, based on Geoff's but i made i few changes.
Primed it with an etch primer for aluminium and satin black top coat. doesnt look amazing but it should do the job. just got to install a cold air feed now.
Oh and the sticker is just to cover a mark on the aluminium, i would have preferred it to not be on there tbh.

Where did you get the protective edging I cant find any anywhere! :(

I have got an astra van and behind the seats are cubby holes with rubber edging on!! There wasnt enough to do the whole thing so i just did the straight edges as they were hard to get dead square using snips, so the edging made them look a bit better.

Followed geoffs design, however i didnt cut the bracket into the right hand side of it, i just made both sides the same and then rivetted a bracket in place after.

You can get it on eBay mate. Search edge trim, I got a few metres for £3 per metre... Bargain

I think it would work better without the coupler between the MAF and the filter,
and also, why didn't you fold the card around the right edge of the filter? you changing the shape?
 
The coupler is there to straighten the airflow pre-MAF to ensure further longevity of it, its widely implemented across SCN and works well. It also sticks the filter nearer the air feed which is now noticeably cooler than when it was attached to the MAF. The shield i am making is basically a Neuspeed/Jabba hybrid, best bits from both, there is no right hand wall as there is no point, the turret is enough and gives the filter more room to breathe and a larger area for the cold air to be trapped in.

Ok so thought I would put a couple of pics of my attempt up, I couldnt get hold of any aluminium so ended up using .6mm steel which seems sturdy enough for now :shrug: just waiting for some edging strip from ebay to just finish it off :icon_thumright: Now all I need is to sort out a decent cold air feed!

Put two brackets on it and it sits on a foam pad on top of the cabling conduit this thing aint goin nowhere :eyebrows:

That looks very professional JB good work. I'm going to get a Jetex filter this weekend but I'm still torn between a custom enclosure like yours or a cut and hack at the standard air box to keep the OEM look :uhm:
 
I did think about hacking the standard box like tuffty and others but decided it was just as easy to make a custom shield, if it was painted crackle black then I think it would blend a bit better. It might be possible to fit the old airbox cover over it which is something I hadnt thought of might look into that tomorrow :idea:

If you can get the old air box cover to go on your custom shield that would be ideal. The thing I dont like about hacking the standard box for a cone is that it has to be squeezed in to fit.

Having some trouble getting the edging strip though, anyone know of any high street stores that stock it? My local RS Trade Counter does but they don't open on Saturday's.

mine was a pain to get it to fit!

I wish i extended mine towards the wing like you have, it looks much better.

Any updates on cold air feeds would be appreciated as this is the next thing on my list.
 
Anyone fancy making one of these for me as I don't trust myself? lol I'll pay well!

I have a spare one ready to go, just needs to be cut out of the template. You would however need to cut your own MAF hole as each car is slightly different, especially those with 3" TIP. Where are you located, if close I could do this for you?
 
Ooo sounds tempting! :) I live in canterbury in kent mate. If all I would need to do is cut the MAF hole I'll take it mate.
