RS3 Discussion Thread

Right, back from the garage - they were pretty honest and confirmed they had simply lost my details :banghead:

They confirmed that car's can't be physically ordered until 13th December when it is due to appear on the ordering system with all the options priced up. That is when the spec will be finally sorted out.

So going back to see them on Monday to see what the final definitive spec is but told them I don't like the SB and I don't like the S-Tronic so it is unlikely that I'd take them up on it.

They also said no limited edition - just likely to be limited in the first year to 500 RHD cars.

Seeing as there are a few of you that seem to be in the 'Audi loop' in this thread... When do you think the new A3 will be released considering the RS3 will arrive early next year? Does that pretty much rule a 2011 release date out?

If the 1series didnt look so awful then I reckon a lot of us here would be in one!

I would love BMW to bring out a new less ugly model and give us some choice.

cheers

I'm with you, I just dont like the look of it. The 1 series has always had sagging side lines at the sills that I dont like on any car.
The M1 will no doubt be more of a 'drivers' car & not the drama free that the RS3 will be.

Might get caned for this but I reckon driver wise this 1M is goin to be much more of a drivers car IMHO

Manual.
Twin turbocharged.
Remappable.
RWD
M DIFF

As mentioned a million times. If I could order a man,3dr RS3 then I'd have issues picking (based on not driving either of them of course) but as it stands 'M' ADL!

the 1 series may be an ugly car but you have to admit. They have done a fantastic job with this car. Bodykit is totally 100% unique to it over other 1's and look at the cut outs on rear

have to agree with you 100% this will be an amazing drivers car, its just a pity it looks like it does

Brakes look the same as the one you have pictured, only the wheels have changed. If they are an option then there is £10k off straight away!

Hopefully I'll get a lottery win between now and then, but at £60k it would be much better value than an RS3.

I see its to be about £150K!!!

If I was straying from audi I would probs go for an Evo X over the M1.

To compete in price with Lancia's new Stratos??? That is big dollars, but then it's very light and there are rumoured to be many composite materials used in the weight save.

Audi seem to be covering bases at the moment, BMW launch the M1 and they cobble together an RS3. Lancia relaunch the Stratos and the Quattro Coupe appears from nowhere.

It's not on the Audi system yet so no one can place a firm order. Garages were told it would be w/c 13th December, so 3 more days yet....

Yeah, I thought that too. Was all set to visit my dealer on Monday and place an order before being told that I'd have to wait. Oh, the suspense...

Perhaps Audi UK are lobbying Ingolstadt for a 3 door manual, and that's causing the delay.....

We wish!

Either their website is ahead of their ordering system, or Camberley Audi have forgotten me again....

Yep, with you on this.
Lightly used examples are a top buy.
Personally speaking its the perfect stop gap until the new platform S3 comes along.

Still not available to order on the UK Audi dealer system. Given the German brochure is dated 20th December 2010 I'm guessing it will be available on Monday.

I have to admit having had more of a look on the Audi UK site and the German brochure, I'm beginning to wonder to take a punt on it? I've got the cash to buy it in the bank earning no interest, so it may just be worth ordering one and if I don't like it sell it on....

I couldn't think of a worse thing to do then to buy a new car..realise you don't like it and sell it on. There is no doubt in my mind you would lose out on a few k in the process too. Wouldn't it be alot more wiser to wait til it's out..have a go in a demonstrator and if you like it then order one?.

I would ordinarily agree 100% which is why I've never bought a new car.

However we know there will be limited numbers so there may be the option to sell over book and make a few £k. I appreciate that would be a massive gamble, and given I'm normally risk averse is probably a risk too far.

It's not a limited edition so your each car won't have a plaque in it to say it is car x of y, however there are a number of RHD cars for 2011 (350 has been suggested to me by the dealer), and given the 8P A3 platform is due for replacement, probably in early 2012, that would probably mean a full year of production in 2012. So my guestimate would be somewhere around 800 RHD cars in total over a 21 month lifespan.

Buying a car as an investment of any kind is a little bit crazy :) you may be able to sell the slot on to someone for a little more than you paid and I believe the residuals will hold up fairly well, so after 3 years you may retain 60% but I wouldn't think for one second. But once you have the car it will only lose money and very quickly too.

The reason I'm buying one is that I really like my S3 Sportback DSG, the bits I don't like about it are likely to be fixed on the RS3 but even if they're not 100% it's still going to be a great little car with a great engine, even if it's a bit expensive which if you were to spec up an S3 to it's level would only be an extra 5k or so. The 1M doesn't even come close to floating my boat, it's RWD and living in the far north means that it would cripple me for 3 months, it looks like a bag of smashed arr-soles and you're always going to wish you had bought an M3.

Here's why the RS3 meets what some folk want, it's 4WD and despite what some people claim, the S3s Haldex system is excellent in the snow as proven by me, this very morning :). It's fast, in anyones book sub 5 secs 0-62 is quick and plenty quick enough. It's still really practical and relatively light on the motion lotion. And wrapping up that package is the RS bade with all the little special bits that come along, upgraded suspension, brakes, looks. The bits I'm hoping have been looked at are the understeer which is excessive (staggared tyres and altered geometry should help) and the numb, slight vague steering which should be much better.

I don't think it's just been cobbled together, balancing out that car so it handles well wont be as easy as all that, the CF wings, staggared wheel sizes and other bits suggest that they've done more than just chucked some bits together and put an RS badge on it. I will admit that it doesn't look all that special and while it would have no practical benefit and would probably sap performance some lovely big twin exhaust tips at the back would look a bit better :) so it's not precisely what I would have chosen and it does feel a little over priced but I still want one, and I've put a deposit down. Cars like these are not about value, or investment, arguements like that make no sense. It's an indulgence and this one suits me the only gamble I'm taking is that it's not totally awful and I don't think there's a huge risk of that.

Go for it, i was thinking of buying 1 till i found out it was DSG only. Ive driven a few DSG cars and i just dont like it, i prefer the interface a manual box gives you and if they did a 3 door manual version i would of been knocking the door down at my local Audi centre with the deposit, but alas no. So i decided to tun the S3 up a bit and see what the new S3 will be like in a year or so.

Hey Boab that was a good post I especially like this bit though,

it looks like a bag of smashed arr-soles

lmao!

Though, for me one of the reasons I got my S3 was 4wd, and in this weather it is just unstoppable coupled with winter tyres, I wish it was a little more rear end bias in the snow, be much more fun, but the RS3 is 2" s lower, that would make a big difference in being able to drive it around in snow. (lets assume we will have some more snow like these last couple of years) Sort of for me going a little backwards.
I agree the RS3 for me certainly hits the notes that I wish the S3 has.

Only 500 for the UK. Customer ordering starts on the 6th of January, with people who've registered interest having first dibs.

I have my name down for one. However I don't want one of the first deliveries, is this possible?

I would like delivery to be later in 2011

Not sure. Apparently delivery dates for first orders won't be announced till March. Guess you could take your chances and wait before you order, but by then the UK quota might be gone. You could ask your dealer if you could have their demo / showroom car (if they order one). They have to wait a minimum of 3 months before they can sell that I think.
