Window rattle.

Hi all, anyone had this problem?

The drivers door/window seems to rattle from time to time on my A3 SB. The rattle happens on uneven road surfaces. If I drop the window slightly it stops. The other thing I've noticed is that it goes away if the car is wet. I can also stop it if I push outwards on the glass. Going to get the dealer to look at it but thought I may be able to give them a bit of a steer as to what to try to cure the problem.

mine rattles too when the window is down not all the way but about 3/4 way down its really bugging me but if i put it up just a fraction it stops let us know how you get on with yours
 
My drivers window is exactly the same, When it's fully up it still rattles abit,but if i move the window 'slightly' down (no wind noise passing through) it stops. :huh:
 
why do they rattle when they are supposed to be held tight by the buffers ?
 
Me too. Just started this week on my 2010 SB. I've now got a rattle from the window as you describe, when it's fully up, and another different rattle in the door which stops if I lean on the door arm rest! My 6 year old S4 never rattled. The A3 just doesn't seem as well screwed together..
 
Oh, and one of the xenons packed in tonight on the way home!! grrr..
 
My '60' plate S3 is going in next week too for similar, there is a rattle in both doors, more so when you have a song on with big bass, and also the radio reception is shocking, even struggles to get Radio 1 in most areas, tried fine tuning but its even worse.

Thats on top of them stripping half the car already to find the last loose clip that was eventually in the door, and they thought it was in either the glove box or seat!!

Think these things are thrown together these days, there seems to be a new rattle/creak every day.

Mine rattles a treat, and it's been in twice already. There seem to be a few issues all centered around the doors. The first issue was what sounded like the windows rattling inside the door, but actually turned out to be the door seals creaking against the metal door frame. It's a common problem and requires a certain type of lubricant, or Audi will apply it for you but th trouble is it rubs off after a few months and the creaking returns.

I'm also not convinced that my windows/speakers/doorcards etc don't rattle.

Oh, and my exhaust knocks on hard accelaration, been fixed once already.

Not bad for a 9 month old car!!!

I know the feeling, have now bought a set of original D2S bulbs of ebay.de, so will have the current working bulb off the car spare if you want it for i don't know, £10 + pp?

Yep, Audi build quality isn't what it once was, I am actually beginning to think there isn't much between them and some of the competition these days. I've had Jap cars that rattled less after 5 years and 50k miles!
 
ive got exactly the same problem.. i thought it was due to lowering the car (stiffening) that the rattle started but after seeing this clearly not.. i put it in to Audi and they smeared this lubricant all over the place and made a right mess.. it didnt even work! got about 5 mins down the road, hit a bad surface and it was exactly the same!!

Beanoir - noting S3RYE's comments on the lubricant being no good that Audi smeared all over his doors, have you got any ideas what type of lubricant they recommend / use? I'd gladly get some to stop my doors creaking...

Not the lube when they're fixing your motor and trying to shaft you for £00s though...
 
I sure do, I put a post up about a few weeks ago when I discovered the type of lubricant that Audi (and indeed the VAG group and other car manufacturers) use. It's not cheap, but I can vouch that it does last quite a lot longer than other products, some of which shouldn't be used like silicon based products etc. You don't need to smother this stuff on either as a little goes quite a way. Apparently the trick to it working is to ensure its worked well into the folds and corners, as this is where the creaks generally come from.

I ask as another part of the company I work for makes all kinds of greases & lubricants (no sniggering at the back Aythree or crazy 88).
So when I find out exactly what type of grease it is I can grab some and "investigate a possible new sales area".

hey no need to apologise - it's a public forum and whilst it's sort of nice to hear I'm not the only person suffering from this irritation, it's good that it's sparked some useful debate on how it could be rectified.

Audi will be looking at mine next week I think. I'll let you know if they cure it and what they tried. My R32 didn't rattle like this and that was over 4 years old with 60k miles on the clock.
 
Is this not the old "creak" issue? The door rubbers dry out a bit and rub the edge of the roof. If you open the windows just a little this reduces the inward pressure just a bit and no creak
Various remedies have been suggested here including wax crayon!
I've used a silcon based body "wax" rubbed into the felt surface of the seals (and the roof) which seems to work for a fair few months

Thats exactly the problem, and a ****** annoying one at that.

I think silicone works for a while, but it's not inert to other contaminants and cleaners so will wear off very quick and you need to keep applying it quite often, depends on how well you wash the door shuts I guess ;)
 
Oh man mine creaks and rattles and everything, and I've had the door trim off several times, all clips replaced, it's just shocking tbh. Also my passenger side door handle (that you pull to close the door, not that you open the door with) creaks really bad if someone actually uses it to close the door! My Corsa had less rattles...seriously.... but I just turn the music up now and blame my coilovers!
 
Anyone tried vaseline on the door seals yet, this may help, worth a try, not sure of the dissapation duration.
 
Mine has a rattly/creaky passenger door, been back twice so far, greased various things, wrapped some cables in felt, used the Krytox stuff. Seems better but not fully resolved, can still hear it when in passenger seat and radio off, will go back again at some point. Never had rattles like this with several Jap cars and older Audis.

Vaseline contains hydrocarbons, so it will vulcanise the rubber and make it go hard, and you'll start getting leaky door seals!

Mine rattles too on both doors. Started about 2 months after i bought it and feels like little stones trapped in the door moving around. No rattles on smooth roads though but once you hear it, your ear keeps listening out for them! annoying

Not taking mine back for that, don't think they would care
 
I applied 303 aerospace protectant (water based) and after a week's use no squeaks at all. Dead silent.
It might not last as long as Krytox GPL 105 but it is much cheaper.

I have had my car a week and the drivers side top of the window rattles when its done up. drives me crazy!!!!

Can someone let me know exactly which parts you should lubricate? Is it the robber on the outside of the felt part on the inside... or somewhere else?

God, my car does this too - it's driving me insane!!! Audi have given me some of that Krytox stuff, but like apoc-reg I don't know where to apply it. Can anyone help?
 
I use Gummi Pfledge Stick on my door and window seals and it has fixed the rattles.

You need to reapply every few months but it's very easy to use, is a clean and non greasy product and does the job great.

Very happy with the results.

Just an update on this: I complained to Audi and they gave me a bottle of the VW-rebadged Krytox 105. Was unsure of which was the precise seal, however it transpires it's the outer "felt" seal that's the problem - I suppose I could have worked that out based on the fact that everytime it rains, the creaking stops! Anyway, you have to rub the oil well into the felt along the seal and also into the fold, it cures it completely.

Messy, but effective.

im having the sam problem with the front passenger door to be honest i took off the door card to check but all seemed okay and tried to tighten everything back up to no joy any pointer on this rather annoying problem
 
Ive just ordered some krytox gpl 105 not cheap but worth a go

I have no faith in main dealers but they should be sorting this out if thats where a car was purchased and its still under warranty

Mine has a year left but I will try this myself first
 
Just an update, not tried the krytox yet, but discovered that cracking/crackling noises go when the car is warmer inside

Ive had other cars which make noises as they warm up, and realised that when I bought it it was warmer outside and no noises

Any thoughts ?
 
Use gummi pfledge, its cheaper, doesnt damage the rubber, because even the expensive stuff will need re applying.
And yes these cars do creak and rattle, drives me nuts.
Much much wrose when the temp is zero or below. I have felt pads all over the doors and they still rattle and creak.
 
hi guys i realise that the last post was 11/13 but i just wanted to ask a few quick questions regarding this-

1. where is this specifically applied to the inside of the door rubber where it meets the paint or inside where the glass meets?

2. i have tried gummi pflege and got nowhere as anyone since found another soloution more readily availiable?

I am selling a new 30ml bottle of VAG special lubricant, made in the USA which I bought as a last ditch attempt to sort things out (I didnt end up using it in the end because it turned out my passenger side window had been smashed when the car was with the previous owner-glass rattling around all inside the door panel, main dealer couldnt fix it or wouldnt fix it, so in the end sold the car back to them)


It cost me £41.50 including delivery so would want £30 inc delivery for it ! 2014 08 06 161435
 
You need to cover all the door seal thats attached to the car and then on the door try to get the stuff on the rubber that looks like felt on the top seal. Basically it doesnt hurt to cover all the rubber seals. You may need to re-do occasionally.
