Finally getting my brakes done. Where to get disc & pads?

I wouldn't dream of mis-quoting you Bill, but you told me to go with DS2500 pads as DS3000 are more for track use due to needing more warmth to get going . . . ? Unless I misunderstood the term "need more warmth"???

I did'nt say they need more warmth to get going... as they dont.
simples

ds2500's have higher friction coefficient than std pads across the entire heat range, so bite more than std pads
if yours dont feel like this, you have'nt bedded them in, so try that and start over

they work perfectly from cold. and better again when used in anger...

Oh right i see.. Thanks bill! Whats the proper way to bed these in then? Im thinking of getting some!

Nah, just thought I'd put new gear on all round.

But for anyone wondering whether to bother putting expensive discs and pads on the rear, don't bother because they'll be wasted!
id still go with relatively expensive pads tbh. one guy i knew a while back on cgti had a mk2 valver for track work which used to boil the brake fluid over and over again. turned out to be cheapy cheap rear pads putting loads of heat into the system.

he put on slightly less cheap ATE pads from euros and all was good again, they could handle the relatively low temps properly

simple question

EBC yellow...is it any better from oem ones (using oem disks)
i know ferodo is the best to have but on EBC's what to have for "road" use

yellows are working better than the reds for me.. I am testing them on my S6... working, dare I say, pretty well.
reds before it were shyte.. needed warming up and went off, leaving hot spots on the disk and judder..

my most vivid experience of reds.

leaving the M40 , heading up a slip road still doing motorway ish speeds, remembering "oh crud, ive not braked in absolutely miles" and it was the dead of winter and forgot how little the responded in the cold. tentatively poked the pedal and had no where near the response youd like. really had a heave on the pedal to slow it down as much as id want

im on my third set of yellows on the GTI now, love em, cold response is like the oe pagids it had before, but ive got no idea of co-efficient numbers off the top of my head.

do recommend them though. do they take the abuse well on the S6?

i would have considered them on the S4 had i kept it long enough

I have'nt nailed my S6 much on brakes as its my road car (compared to braking in my ibiza when racing on Ds3000's)
under same hard road braking I have done, the yellows are working with no fuss and pull up well, where the reds needed heat first then groaned a lot when they got hot, leavign pad material stuck to disk face which caused judDEr.

rs6 Brakes on my S6, 8-pot brembo's and 370mm disks

and for those who wonder who I am and wtf I know about brakes etc... here is a recent bespoke 330x28 kit I built up to fit under 16" rims on an R32 engined Mk2 golf racing in the vag trophy

I'm not worried about my brake fluid boiling over. My brake setup is for hard road use and a few laps of the ring so my Motul fluid should hold up fine considering it'll be difficult enough to boil it on a track car.

I'm not trying to start an argument just for the sake of it but from what I saw on my discs and pads It doesn't look like the rears do much braking at all on the S3 so maybe you mates car had more of a rear bias than the S3?!

I got my car back yesterday after all the work and it feels like a brand new car! Steering feels sharper after the power steering fluid was changed, car turns over smoother and idles smoother too, car seems to purr now, love it.

As for the brakes they are superb! I spent last night bedding them in following Bills guide, and they just got better and better. My clutch also feels so much better after having the clutch master cylinder bled.

Only issue was with the braded brake lines on the rear. I had bought a 4 hose Hel kit and apparently the rears are to big for the standard fixings and would have needed a bit of work to get them to fit.

All in all though i'm very happy.

What work you had done mate?

You got your cold morning start problem fixed?

I had a major sevice (plugs, filters, oil change, power steering fluid etc) including cambelt, waterpump, aux belt, new discs and pads, braded hoses, and brake fluid change.

My car did start perfectly this morning but It wasn't excactly cold this morning. I'll monitor it for this week and keep you updated. Maybe its related to the spark plugs :uhm:

Westle !
If i had of read this earlier i could of sorted you out with a good price on the DS2500 pads front & rear. Their our main supplier at work :)

And also you guys try using Brake Engineering for your disc's there decent priced & trust me i sell a shed loads & there great stuff for discs, calipers & drums :o.k:
