    I'm closer to 50 than 25 and my 1st car was a Mk2, 4 door ford escort 1.3 in red, 1 st mod was a speedograph pancake mesh filter....and been modding everything ever since!.

    My first car was a 1.3 Mk3 Escort which I blew up at 105mph within a couple of months, my second was a 2.8I Ghia X Granada that drank as much ATF as fuel on the Bournemouth Westover racetrack, but my third was a Lanchester LD10 with pre-selector gearbox.......:detective2:

    Kids of today are spoilt by cheap good cars- just about all modern cars are great whereas in my day they were all shagged within 100k miles. But insurance was a weeks wages when I was 17, whereas nowadays it's more like a month or two for the kiddywinks. Bless 'em...

    My lex was cheap and to be fair so was my insurance..... though I did kill mine... I blew two engines in 4 months :unhappy:

    Me and my 2 passengers very luckily got away without a scratch on us. Decided to kiss the rear quarter of a articulated lorry

    And insurance on this was £1475! for a 1 liter XN (base model, no mod-cons)

    Being this age does have its benefits - affording brand new 8V S3 purely for weekend driving fun.

    First car was Corsa 1.2. It was a beast. 65 bhp....

    I did better with my second car. Brand new Mk5 Golf GTI - 197bhp. I was only 19!

    Was a scary jump !

    Mines was a scary jump too, from a 153 to my 225 TT haha.... my TT is only my second car only been driving nearly 2 years :)

    My first car was a Corsa 1.5D with a bodykit and SRI interior lol

    Hey...proper man's cars... I bet you used to run over cardboard boxes like I did in my Granada... Were you Body or Doyle..? :thumbs up:

    Today's cars might have a lot more power but they're pussy-cats to drive in comparison as they handle so well, have abs and airbags etc. Try putting 150hp down through a 1980s rwd Ford chassis in the rain.. My Granada was a proper wet roundabout special! We learned about oversteer the hard way (and by practising in Tesco's car park in the snow) and learned how to power drift before the Japs 'invented' it! The height of tuning was to get a 1.6 Cortina and dump a 2L engine in retaining the 1.6 gearing. Mate wrapped one of those around a lampost on the Bournemouth 'circuit' after a massive fishtail. We spent the weekend swapping the engine back in case the insurers paid a visit... There was no easy credit then so I worked bloody hard to get a Porsche by 24 and was dead proud. :cool: Even that was ***** by comparison of today's cars. But the Silver Shadow I was driving a couple of years before was cool as a cucumber. One thing I learned back then was big powerful 'old man's cars' were considerably cheaper to insure and went like stink. It certainly raised a few eyebrows to see youngsters driving around in a Roller with windows down, heavy metal blaring, wheelspinning and generally hooning around. Parts were ridiculous (I remember well-£457 for a backbox of the exhaust in 1993) so it didn't stay long.

    Indeed proper cars,the Cortina was only a 1300 so under powered and like a tank:D The doly however was a quick motor in its day,2000cc and 16 valve.......wow a full 16 valve:laugh: mild by todays motors but fun in the day.

    Yeah- bit of an an oddity- 16v but one camshaft. Wanted one in a TR7 convertible. A full 127bhp IIRC? Cool car as it looked like the car grandad would get his pension in, but went like stink! And the Professionals had one. I had a Volvo 360GLT once that was a bit like that. More power and quicker then XR3is but dead cheap insurance, and plenty of rwd fun! Surprisingly balanced too with gearbox in the back like the Porsche I replaced it with. Did have an old Volvo 240 2.3 GLT estate too, all painted in matt black that went pretty well too, but could easily get our BMXs in the back...

    Would love a Mk3 Cortina nowadays...

    My best pal at university had a Dolomite as his first car, sadly not a Sprint but the standard 1854 8-valver. It was nine years old, everything on it was shot to pieces, but it still chucked out a fair bit of torque. This was channeled through a pair of massive (I kid you not) 155x13 tyres, which only maintained the briefest of contact with Edinburgh's setts (that's cobbles to the rest of us). These streets were worn smooth and permanently wet. We had years of fun tail-sliding it round the city at absurdly slow speeds (just as well because the brakes were non-existent). Opposite lock was never so much fun. Its remains were finally laid to rest in a scrapyard in Inveraray after a visit to the Mull of Kintyre proved too much for what was left of the engine after years of abuse.

    The Dolomite cost £150 to buy in 1981 and in 1984, the scrappy gave us money to buy two bus tickets back to Edinburgh, with enough left over for twenty pints of 80 Shilling to give the car a fitting send-off.

    Mate at college had a Reliant Regal so we spent ages trying, unsuccessfully, to find the balance point, while hacking around the New Forest. Still, no problem to rock it back on it's wheels....

    My best wet roundabaout special was a BMW 320. Black with full Mtech interior and wheels (a massive 16"x 205 IIRC!!) and 4 barrel carb. Man, that thing could drift... Sold it to a mate who took it up to London and got a a big tug from armed Plod. Turned out to be an ex drug dealers car (who'd have thought..?) and they were still on the lookout for it as he was 'wanted'. Gave my mate a surprise...

    My own first car was this fine piece of machinery: a 1976 Opel Ascona 1.9SR

    Pretty similar spec to a Dolomite; 1.9 litre engine, 90bhp/105 torques (when new), RWD and weighed just about 1000kg. This had a much better sorted chassis and brakes though. Still very primitive by today's standards, but it had beautiful balance.

    My 1st car was a 1978 Ford Escort Mk2 1300. I always wanted a black car, so I spent my first weekend with the car and a tin of black paint, and hand painted it black! It looked ok from a distance lol, and I remember at night you could have the lights on OR the radio, but not both together! I also had house speakers in it, as it had no speakers at all in it!

    As **** as it was and the fact at that point I was scraping by with whatever money I had, I still look back at it with fond memorys!

    Incidently, about 5 months along, it went for its MOT and failed on just about everything it could fail on!

    I'm 29 I've had 10 cars and I've got 8 years no claims :) insurance on my first car (Mk2 Golf 1.8 GL) was £2040 as a named driver! now my insurance is around £300 full comp :)

    Age does have its benefits! I think I paid £1,550 for insurance my first car. Remember thinking at the time that was quite good after getting quotes for £3k!

    I'm at 10 cars too ! (14 including company cars - but that's just showing off!).
