Really peed off, I was on my way to get my car taxed between appointments at work (ran out yesterday!), before I got to the post office my car started juddering and the engine light started flicking.

I new instantly another coil pack had failed ( my first coil pack failed about 6wks ago ) so i turned round and headed towards Bradford Audi, on my way I rang to see if they had any in stock. Nope! It was 4:30 so i rang Leeds Audi who had some so after an awful 30mins on the motorway i deceided to buy 3 to replace tho old ones. I asked for a discount and got 20% off so all 3 for £70, so thanks Leeds Audi.

The guy said that it got so bad with coil packs 4/5 yrs ago the factory that produced the coil packs couldnt keep up so Audi/VW bought the factory to increase production!

After changing all the packs the car started fine but there was a really loud banging/knocking sound coming from the front of the engine ( near all the belts/pullys etc ), has any one else suffered with this? I could still hear the knocking when I was stationary but it finally stopped after about 20 mins. Can any one shed any light on what this may be?

Sorry for the long post!

****** Coil packs!

I did the same mate, i changed all 4 for brand new and keep the other good 3 in my Boot just incase!

Not sure about your knocking though, mine never did that.
Maybe someone else will be along soon to shed aome light on this for you...

When you drove the half hour, How fast was you driving? revs etc..
Im sure you aint stupid enough to rag it with a coil down.
Just curious as the banging is a new one to me...

Cheers for the reply Juss.

I was so p***ed off with the coil packs i just chucked them in a skip!

I was driving pretty slow under 50mph etc in 6th.

My other half has just said that she heard a tapping sound coming from the engine when idleing about a week ago, but it only lasted a min or so.

Im puzzled now!

Tapping sound? hmmmm...then you get Knocking and banging today...
Seriously mate id get it checked out asap because (fingers crossed it dont) if something does go wrong and could end up very costly then you'll only be saying that you heard the symptoms and wish you had got it checked out.
Get it checked before its too late.

Im going from own experience

Last time my engine started tapping, 3 weeks later it came back loud as fooook then Bang - Bye Bye Engine and bye bye Turbo...
3wks + £3200 later and Im back on the road with a 2nd hand enigne and new turbo!!!!

I aint trying to **** you up or owt but wouldnt wish the same stress on anyone what I had:3sadwalk:

It might be something small but least you can nip it in the bud mate.
Common fault on my engine code was Oil sludge which starved the engine of oil eventually until it was too late on the motorway doing 80mph and conked out in the middle lane:faint:.Just a ****** good job it was on a sunday and roads were pretty dead!

Turns out if I had got it sorted when I first head the Tapping, it would have only cost me around £300!!

Not common on your motor though.

if its a 1.8t chances are it could be a starved top end/turbo. The oil pick up pipe from the sump to the top of the engine(which also feeds the turbo bearings) is reknowned for blocking up, then staving the tappets of oil and the turbo bearing. seriously book the car into a VAG specialist and get the sump off and pick up pipe changed and fresh fully synth oil. Its probably a 150 quid job. the pipe is about 8quid.

It happened to me( i was unaware of the problem) on a run to cornwall and ended up costing me nearly 1000quid because i melted the turbo bearings. luckily no other damage was done.

Audi know of the problem. in the USA with full dealer history they'd do it under waranty. but Audi UK basically ****** everyone off.
