So, I'm driving in the rain with wipers on and pull up at the bank, come back out, still raining and the wipers are still switched on at the stalk, but the wipers aren't working. I have to manually turn the wipers off and back on again, this happens every time I stop and get out of the car. Is there a reason for this, and more importantly, can it be fixed?

It's not broken. it's how they've always been.

Let me give you a scenario.

Its absolutely peeing it down, wipers on.....

You arrive at work, do a days work.

You come out, Its been a scorcher for the rest if the day, so no need for wipers.

However, it's been a long day, you switch the car on, and boom wipers wipe all across all of your screen smudging all the pigeon **** everywhere + wearing your wipers out across a dry windscreen.

    OH F#^k sake you say!

However! That doesn't happen^ They have to be re-told it's raining as in reality it has no concept of time nor weather, that until you switch them back on and auto wipers will kick in if you have the sensor.

Smart when you think about it.

Thanks for your reply, however a timer would probably be more appropriate for it, or an option to switch that function on/off, I make short journeys a lot, with short stops and it does become annoying on a rainy day.

I see your point, but unless really your a postman or a multi drop driver, I can't see it being a major hindrance to the vast population of people using 8P's.

And I'll add to that... What if you turn off your car when you get home with the wipers still switched on and overnight it freezes and snows. Wipers start when you switch on the car and burn out the motor. Not nice, had this happen to a girlfriend a while back so she was stuck without her wipers for a week!

Correct me if i'm wrong but I don't believe they do start again when you switch the car back on, I think you have to pull the stalk down to the off position and then re-activate them if you want them to continue wiping.

You're right, and that's why I was adding it to the original example. It's what could happen if the wipers didn't wait for you to re-activate them was what I was trying to get at. Haha.

Well, I never had any of the above problems with my 8L, but now I know that that's how it is, I'll live with it. At ease gentlemen :-D

They will start working again if you leave the wiper stalk alone (on) and just drive away, after a few feet they come on as previous.

Only discovered this today after owning the car for almost 3 months. I always thought I was going barmy with the auto wipers and how they work but they're sweet.

Some folk are never happy ...
I think it's a great touch and never paid much attention to it :)
Not much effort needed for moving the stalk is there :p

I don't know why people bother to reply when they can't give any constructive information. I started this topic asking if this could be fixed and get told to "stop moaning" or that I'm "not happy". It doesn't suit me that's all, I can live with it now I know that's the way it is, is that okay with all you folk?

Yeah sorry about that ;-) The answer is get in and drive off and bingo the wipers do their thang as soon as you drive. So less effort for you!

My bad - sounds like you're sensor isn't working. Have you had the windscreen replaced, perhaps not taking into account the sensor?

I don't have auto wipers, no sensor in window and that's how mine work :/

i also thought they was broken as I knew the stalk was on but didn't respond, but on driving away they work!

Also thought something was wrong when they are in position 2/3 (constant & stupidly fast) that when stopping at lights etc they slow down to intermittent, drive off and they resume the previous speed

Only thing that does annoy me is that to activate the wipers in the car it needs to be moved up, but the wipers in my van needs to be moved down!!! It's the van that's wrong if you ask me

Sorry guys can't shed anymore light on this one apart from get some hydrophobic coatings on the screen & you won't need the wipers as much ;)
