Yay. A new boost leak to hunt down and sort.

Appeared last night driving over to Trowbridge whilst racing (to 60) some nobber in a Jag.

Quite pronounced and loud, but only when on full boost! Not going to be an easy one to find me thinks.

    Damn it!!

You'd of thought after a few months of having this cooler, I would of had all the leaks pegged down by now!!

odd that you keep getting leaks Welly, what clamps are you using?

I had lots of problems with leaks and hoses popping off at 22psi on my AGU, when using Mikalor clamps.

I switched to JCS Hi-Torque jubilee style clamps on advice from Forge, and I've not popped a single hose since!

They're pukka Jubilee ones - 70 - 90 mm. They cost me a bloody packet as well :-(. To be honest, the pipework assembly is tight as a gnat's arse, so I think engine movement causes it eventually.

I'll just take the bumper off and inspect. Its always one of a few places - mainly where the pipework leaves and comes into the engine bay. Also the MAP sensor pipe. May be time to invest in a real one.

i put a complete silicon hose kit on the s4 when i bought it. total clip count was in the HUNDREDS.

when i did the cambelt job i could tell straight away i wasnt getting the boost response, i had disturbed a pipe or two.

since i did those, i get loads more mpg and the car is nice and fast now

not tempted to get a boost leak kit welly?

Book it in for a Badger5 boost leak test (tm) :icon_thumright:

I must say the Hi-Torque clips are really good and worth the investment... more so I would say than the Mikalor types simply because you can get a proper feel for when the things are tight whereas the Mikalor t-clamps just seem to keep tightening until you end up crushing the pipes without realising...

In my experience, the biggest contributor to 'popped' hoses is the lack of bead rolled edges on pipes and leaks are usually due to overtightened T-Clamps either crushing pipes or not the right size and reeving up thus not clamping uniformly or just not being tight enough (jubilees or t-clamps)

Oh, they're all tight enough dude, believe me. As tight as I dared without getting click of death.

All the hard pipes on mine have rolled edges, and there isn't a popped hose - all hoses are present and correct - there is just a leak somewhere. Only under big boosty plops though. Weak join somewhere.

On a side note - the PCV hose from the inlet manifold - can I block it off for testing? What are long term effects of doing so?

I 'manufactured' a hose to replace mine - but in all honesty, it is gash, and I'm not sure how well it's standing up to the punishment I give it. I don't mind spending money on things, but £20+ from the stealer for that bit of rubber is just too excessive for me to swallow.

With regards to a boost pressure test, I did PM Bill as I wasn't sure if he did them or not. But to be honest, I like to find and fix problems myself, as it is far more rewarding!

Favourite place to leak is the joiner coming from the first silicon hose to where the old drivers side SMIC is... joiners are easily crushed...

In your case though I would check the pipes coming off the the inlet mani especially the PCV as you have mentioned... I removed/replaced most of mine but the silicon split (again!!) giving me a vac leak but not a boost leak so it wouldn't surprise me if the same has happened here... bloody pipes are a PITA and I will be removing all that I can and using a catch tank...

That statment always makes me think of a bit of Simpsons dialogue...

Homer: "At times like this, i look at my bracelet" (says WWJD)

Lisa: "Your right dad, What would Jesus Do?"

Homer: "Jesus? I thought it was Jepetto?"

Arrrrrgggghhhhh. No-one ever calls me that. Except my mother. And then when I've been bad, it's Alexander! LOL.

Not even my missus calls me Alex. How weird is that!

Yarp, check the FPR piping and DV piping by blowing and sucking down them (no jokes please...). DV is functioning perfectly.

I have problems all the time down the section you mentioned actually - I shall be looking down there as my first port of call.

    lol,

strange how they do pop off tho considering you can easily hold 22psi back with you hands. Like you say movement is probably the cause, although silicone connectors should allow for alot of movement. might be worth checking the pipework so nothing is under any kind of stress, although im sure you have already thought of this... lol:icon_thumright:

While hoses and clips will hold the pressure as such, bear in mind the pressure typically fluctuates under boost/off boost application and will eventually 'walk' the hoses off the end of a pipe... having a rolled bead will prevent this from happening while the tightness of the clamp will seal enough to prevent air from leaking.

I think I may of cracked it actually. Well hopefully.

Noise has now altered when I popped into Bristol to get some lunch to a squeak sound - meaning it's deffo a leak.

It also sounds under the bonnet.

I have a vague recollection of - when putting the engine back together - putting the red top hose on to the turbo and tightening up the jubilee clip, then getting 'click of death'. At that point (wanting to start it) I thought I'd replace it later.... And then never did. Hmmmmmm.

I've since had the REVO map turned up as well for more boosty.... And I've always thought there may be a leak somewhere - but haven't been able to find it. It may just be that the leak has been getting progressivly worse since then.

I shall look and replace shagged JB clip tonight - and then see what we're got.

If not - off to Badger5 we go. :icon_thumright:

Sadly its an odd shape and size and the only aftermarket replacement I know of is made by Forge...

Gotta love these cars and the quality pipes... although in fairness they are hitting that age where leaks are becoming more of a reality... bit like me ;P LOL
