Presumably it's just through the rear speakers? Or if it's through all speakers then you must have the Bose system. The alternator whine is due to the Audi rear amp and the mickey mouse pre-out wiring they seem to think is good enough for a prestige brand.
You need to rewire the rear speakers directly to the Alpine HU.

thanks Andy, i think it is only the rear ,i will have to disconnect the amp and rewire the speakers to the head unit,

also where is the best place to store the brain for my radio, as its under the seat at the moment and gets in the way,

    cheers, Chris

Its gotta be a bad earth/grounding mate, its one of those long winded cable tracing jobs by the sounds of it I'm afraid, but more often than not if using audi original kit its earthing issues when whining noise through radio, have you anyway of testing another radio as have known this to be the cause, anyone local with same head unit able to help????

Right, wel I have a alpine xda-001 unit so its not standard audi... My local ice shop recommended using a ground loop isolator, not sure if it'll do the trick though...

Ah sorry I didnt know you had changed I thought that was Chris, well I would listen to andy as he does seem to know more than us all, but usually whining is bad earthing as had it happening on other manfucturers aswell years back before I learnt the way of the force(VAG cars) that is, all same reason for fault, but he seems to be wiser so follow him.
