I've decided too buy a large port head for my s3 I know both agu and aeb are both large port heads but am unsure on which one too buy both used and will be checked and cleaned and more than lightly new valve stem seals!
reading tufftys thread last night I see he found 1 diffrence in the head ie the roller tensioner for cambelt its surface was raised??do I grind it down or just buy cambelt kit for an agu or aeb engine code??

Both heads are technically the same... early AEB heads had the tensioner boss which needs machining off rather than grinding to ensure a flat mounting surface...

You just need a cambelt kit for a transverse engine...

I would get the valve guides checked as the exhaust guides will be worn, use new stem seals and cam seals... I would also use all your valves/springs/followers/cams too as they should be in newer condition... transfer your VVT tensioner too...

My AEB doesn;t have the lug for machining off.

I assume this is a common sense answer but if my BAM has 150k and my AEB has 50k, I'd be better keeping the AEB cams etc?

I think there is a difference between VVT and non VVT cams but would need to look that up really... either way you will need to swap the VVT tensioner over, change the cam pulley as the inline ones are different to transverse, I have seen differences in collet groove height between AEB and other heads... installed height is the same but suggests different preload on springs

You will need to swap your VVT unit over of course...

I generally look at condition etc of the two heads and make a judgement on what to use... I typically stick to what I know has worked (ie the original stuff like in your BAM) as even at 50k age is a factor and unknown over stuff such as oil change frequency etc...

Guides will need to be checked regardless...

My aeb was 100 times cleaner than my amk, both the valves and the head as a whole.
Ive used all the aeb valve gear, but put the exhaust valve spacers in from the amk (these are thought to stop springs wearing into the head as opposed to preload, theyre just too thin)
And the inlet cam off my amk is in theredue to the cam pulley differences.

I compared the valves from both heads and other than different branding and letters, no change in collet groove height or anything like that.

new seals all round obv

So I have found a agu head done 100k+ and will need totally rebuilt for me to be happy too fit it but I stumbled across a head on ebay by Lear industries stating large port genuine factory cylinder head complete with cams and sensor ready too fit the picture looked like a small port so I rang and he confirmed it was actually a small port head! Bam sent me pictures and it shows me a brand spanking new head cams sensor/lifters valves all genuine vw/Audi not cheap Chinese copy even comes with genuine vvt what your opinion I am eventually going big turbo?? Large port really needed ??

Small port up to 350hp... beyond that and certainly on big turbo large port...
