Which gearbox?

Hi all, so my mechanic has advised me to obtain another gearbox. I think the selector fork rivet on mine has gone. He said this would be to laborious to change and a pia thought the guides I've read make it seem simple? He said something about requiring a special tool?

Anyways if I was to start looking at second hand/recon boxes which models would be okay for my car (2001 S3)? I understand theres lots of variation for the 02M boxes? Roughly how much am I looking at for another box?

Most mechanics will rarely take apart a gearbox cos they are quite complex inside and it can be time consuming, that's why there are lots of transmission specialists... That being said I did a selector fork fix my self the other weekend and it wasn't too difficult, but the extra time it takes you'll be better off buying a second hand box if you're paying for labour.

Any 6 speed Quattro gearbox from another S3 8l will do the job... Or indeed a quattro 6 speed mk1 TT. Boxes from mk4 golf r32 and 4 motion will also fit but I'm not sure if the ratios are the same on those, perhaps someone else can confirm?

A fair price for a second hand box seems to be about £150-£200, but there's always bargains to be had out there! . . Where are you based?

Ah okay not so bad I was thinking more £300+ , based just outside the M25 near London (Hemel Hempstead)

Most breakers will ask around 300 quid, but if you ask me breakers always ask silly money, then again I suppose you could argue you might have more to fall back on should it blow up after a couple of weeks...

I'll PM you, I have a box here and you're not too far from me
