Which Bench Shall I Buy For Pushing Weights?

    Hi. I basically want something simple but not too simple. I've seen a couple which have these pads at the end that you can put your legs through so it keeps you sturdy which is what I want with it.

    I know nothing about which brand is best or what to look out for.

    Out of the 4, i would go for the last one.

    Bt tbh, join a gym! Its better training with other people than on your own i reckon :icon_thumright:

    I would go for a bench with wider, adjustable barbell supports.

    The narrow benches with fixed rests can become very uncomfortable.

    This is by far the best but if you have to buy one make sure you get one with extendable height for the weights,can be too tight when using incline if not.

    get a gym membership. I wouldnt recomend doing free weights on your own.

    I agree, not so much for the safety side, it will seem like a good idea for a little while but you'll probably end up not using it.
    Get a gym membership and get down their regularly, if you're serious about getting fit then its the only way to go.

    They're all pants quality compared to proper gym equipment! From experience you rock & roll about on these kind of benchs if your lifting anything heavier than a bag of sugar. Never ever weight train heavy weights on your own, its too dangerous in my view & shared by others based on some of the replies above. Joining a gym is more expensive its true & requires effort to actually go to it if your local one isnt close, but you'll get on a lot better over all! If your gonna go for a bench at home then you've got to get something sturdier, this dosent look too bad, certainly stronger than all the ones you listed!

    My gym membership ended only a couple months ago. Problem was distance for me. Also price was an issue as well as my busy schedule at uni so I would never make great use of it.

    I feel like having a bench at home, after coming home from uni I could work on it then have my shower and sleep.
    I've remembered all the tips & training I had at the gym so don't worry i'm not going to over do it.

    Do thank you all for your advice though, especially the pub one lol =D.

    That bench you put up looks good Nickynibbles but it's wayyy over my budget of £100. My cousin has a bench and it does move from left to right but it's not bad...
    There must be something below £100 that'll do the job...

    Dosent your uni have a gym you can use? Perhaps you could save up by not going out 1 weekend, then you'd have enough to buy the better bench!

    ive trained from home 3 years now, only thing i miss of gym is chekin out chix. i use a reebok utility bench, 60 bucks from argos, free weights nae problem, dont use barbell for bench press , i use dumb bells. only use barbell for overhead press, deadlifts, rows, dbs do everything else.

    Nice. Na uni hasn't got a gym. Funnily enough it's a very good uni but not that big and for the record, I don't go out every weekend, I work as much as I can for my car.
    Rather spend money on that then on drinks.

    As for the bench, what is the actual difference between barbell and dumb bells... Is barbell the long one that goes across your chest when lying down?
    I'm gonna have to look into this reebok bench as well. Still thinking about the point that someone raised about the bench wobbling about, that'd hack me off really badly lol.

    The research continues =)

    I've only ever had 1 gym membership. HATED IT!!! Full over sized arrogant w*nkers!!!

    Why is it when it comes to lifting weights/bodybuilding you get total c*cks who think they're better than everybody yet over the past 9yrs of my going to different kickboxing/mma clubs it's the total opposite!! Everybody is really cool & eager to help newbies instead of smirkin cos you can't lift as much!!

    I've done weights at home for yrs on my own. I've got a York multigym with pec deck & leg attachments, roughly 200kg in free weights & a chin up bar which i'm always climbin on. They're a great upper body workout. Especially if you buy 1 of the weighted 20kg vests.

    I do agree you can do more at a gym. There's more machines that cater for more exercises whereas with free weights at home you're more limited. If I worked regular days i'd prob go to a gym but I work different shifts all the time so most of the time can't be bothered going to the gym & find it easier doing it at home.

    As for using treadmills etc. Seriously can't be bothered running on the spot indoors. Much prefer to get outside & do a nice, fresh air breathing cross country run or get out on my MTB.

    Out of the 4 benches i'd go for 1st or last.

    Also as for somebody saying "if you're serious about getting fit then its the only way to go!!" Just doing weights doesn't get you fit no matter if you're doing them at home or at a gym. Even if you did 2hrs of weights everyday, yeh your heart rate may increase but nowhere near as much as running etc Cardio gets you fit. Emzino hasn't even mentioned cardio. He just said he wanted a bench & weights at home.

    Couple of lads at work make me laugh. They just do weights & no cardio. They say cardio has an adverse effect on their muscle growth. Whereas i'd rather do a good mix of both. Ok so their both bigger but when it comes to having to move quicker than snail pace their both out of breath after 5 mins!! Also in 20yrs time they're prob gonna all saggy & even more out of breath & i'll still be fine:icon_thumright:

    Exactly, nowt worse than having to suffer listening to the likes of 2unlimited on repeat!!

    You can just put on your fave training tunes or whatever & just go for it whenever you want without avin to mess about getting ready to go to gym etc

    </p>Well thats your problem. You need to try different ones to see which suits you. For example when I moved area I went to look at a few gyms to replace a very good gym that I had been using for the past 10 years. The 1st gym I went to had all state of the art cardio equiptment lots of girls and a lovely atmosphere... but the free weight section was shocking I asked why they didnt have any heavier weights and was told, big weights = big guys/twats. I ended up going to another gym which had a much better free weight section but older machines and its full of blokes :( There is so much choice out there you just choose what is right for you. Regarding the music I always have my MP3 player on.
    I think doing heavier wieghts on you own is very very dangerous but if it suits you then fine

    Just buy your self a pull up bar

    more convenient to use, takes up no space and after a few weeks lifting your own body weight you will have arms of steel and a chest like supermans (dont hold me to that)

    Why are some up their own arse, pumped up, over ego'd c*cksuckers my problem? I tried the gym, didn't like it so didn't go back. It's not as if I sit at home sh*tting myself cos i'm too scared to go. You get more respect getting in a ring with somebody, beating the sh*t out of each other for 5x 3min rounds than you do in them places. I'm happy with what I do so no problem for me!!

    I also found 1 yrs ago that's suits me. My own personal gym at home. No over sized w*nkers, got plenty of free weights & a good multigym, pull up bar, 6' kickbag, speedball, floor to ceiling ball & crash mats on my garage floor for when I get my mates round to throw about.

    When I want to look at hot women I can just put my PC on, go to my special folder & just click "view as slide show!!" ;)

    I'm another for the home gym. I didn't like waiting for equipment at my local gym so I started at home. Been training for about 2 years and loving it.

    I download various TV programmes and then watch them in my home gym (spare room) whilst working out.

    Home workouts can be safe. As mentioned do chest presses with dumb bells etc. Also you don't have to go for super heavy weights for a good burn.
    Use strict slow form and try high intensity techniques like when you reach failure, drop the weight and push out a few more, supersets etc etc. Do a search on the set for ideas.

    I do 40-50 min weights and then 30 mins cardio 4 times a week.
