They're about 40-50quid for the fob part iirc.

As long as you have the same style it will work, but you will need VAG COM to code it up.

i currently have one which i brought from ebay but the code is 4D0.837.231K (not A)
this will not code to the car. could it be a faulty fob?

The flip key with these part numbers are all interchangeable:

    4D0 837 231
    4D0 837 231 A
    4D0 837 231 B
    4D0 837 231 N
    4D0 837 231 R

so does that mean the new one I have brought will not work?

    new part number 4D0 837 231 K
    original part number 4D0 837 231 A

    I think that the '4D0 837 231 K' key is for year 2000+ A6/S6/RS6 & TT's.

think you might be right as it did say A6/TT in small print under the part number.

looks like it's going back on ebay until i find the right one.

not if youve got 2 keys
turn ign on with first key
close door and lock manually with 2nd key, press unlock button wait 6 secs press unlock again and its done
swap keys and repeat but press unlock twice then wait and press again
