Wheel size for Winters

A colleague has an A8 3.0TDI Quattro Sport (2007) and was wondering about suitable sizes of wheel he could put on with winter tyres.
He's seen 17 inch A6 wheels on ebay (but no idea about off sets etc).
Can anyone help or suggest something?

He's currently running 275/35 R20 but it says on the sticker inside the fuel flap that 235/55 R17 are suitable.

If going smaller and using genuine audi wheels, as long as the pcd (the gaps between the bolt holes) is the same as his A8 then they will be fine. The only issue he may come across is his speedo maybe slightly out due to the change in rolling circumference of the tyre. It's usually only a small increment, but could be worth checking. This can be offset by buying a winter tyre with a bigger profile. Using a wheel calculator can help.

So basically, a 20" rim with thin tyres can have a similar rolling circumference to a 17" rim with thicker tyres, thus keeping the speedo accurate. That website above is good and useful in event of changing ur alloys too like to something wider than Dawn French and Lisa Riley hugging...

Just make sure the brakes will fit into 17 inch rims. I have 17 inch winter wheels on my A4 and have 345mm brakes on the front. Any bigger than this and you would be into 18 inch wheels.

18's would look better on an A8 but the tyres are a bit more expensive.

newer Audi alloys tend to have 66.5mm PCD , just get some spigot rings for less than£5 off fleabay as I believe the A8 has 57.1mm bore.
