    Hi

I'm considering getting my rear windows tinted to look as though I had the privacy glass option. Does anyone know what % tint privacy glass from Audi is?

    Thanks

Actually looking at some comments, some people think privacy glass looks odd as goes from clear to black. I may get gradual tints for back seat, rear quarter then very dark for rear windscreen

Do you have a SB? Most pics of OEM tints look darker because you are looking in onto black leather. If you find a good one from window height looking through the back, it's not that dark.

Also, tints are usually measured in % of light that gets through... OEM is probably about 70-75%.

On the Sportback there is a greater window area so i guess the change in tint will be more gradual, either way i think tints are a must on white cars as the contrast against the paintwork just looks too good .I had mine fitted from the factory and when the sun is shining down on the windows then you can usually see through the windows so its not exactly as dark as limousine tints.

I'm pretty sure oem is 20% , I had premier tints in Nottingham do it on my old a4 if I find pics I will post them. But with black ext and black int they did look darker!

Make another trip down south :p

Get the guy who shares our unit to tint them, he does lots for our main dealers. He can make it look OEM. As you have a white car like mine you don't notice the clear to dark as much. To be fair, the front windows have a slight tint of 25% darkness. Think the rears are 75-80% darkness.

You can then have DAB and other toys fitted at same time. :D

Sounds good - ill let you know! Hard to convince missus for new toys - getting away with tints as its to 'shield harmful solar radiation from our baby boy' which did the trick :)

Does anyone know whether having tints on the rear windows where all the antennas are has an effect on the signals received? Someone told me they've seen some people have that issue, i didn't really believe him because my cars got non-oem tints that are oem spec and I've never noticed any problems. In my eyes the antennas only blocked from the inside by the film not the outside, not like theres much signal to receive from inside anyway.

Some cheaper tints have a metallic content that can cause disrupt signals. My work A6 had to have a metallic free tint due to the DAB and TV antennas in the rear quarters.

Went to a local guy at lunchtime - he does work for Cardiff Audi, Sytner BMW and just about every mainstream dealer for 20 miles around.

He says he uses 35% when doing work for Audi, but is happy to fit 50% or 20%. I had a look at dot matrix window edge on VW van he had in and it looked to be very good adherence in this area. He needs 3+ days notice so he's pretty popular by all accounts.

He quoted me £135 for the rear half of a Sportback - is this a good price, seems a bit cheap ???

    Called another few local(ish) places...

Globaltint quoted me £100+vat , £120, using Johnson films with lifetime warranty on film and installation

Cardiff Tints quoted £130 with lifetime warranty again.

Both companies 'remove' the window rubber seal to install and not the door cards themselves which i guess means they won't break panel clips and no trim rattles in future.

This also means they don't remove the glass to do the job properly IMO. Any decent fitter can remove door cards and trim without showing any signs of doing so, all the decent fitters around my area do this. These prices seem very cheap to me, beware ;)

I agree with Soulsurfer. The prices do seem a bit cheap.
The quotes I got were between £180/210, thats for window removal and lifetime warranty.
I suppose you can get cheaper. Best look for some reviews, see what other people think.

Thanks for the feedback - Globaltint are a 'national' company and i know a few Audi dealers use them. Actually i think they have a series of installers nationwide, might be nearer the mark. At least they warrant both the install and the film for life.

I thought the first price was cheap, but appears its the going rate round here and two of those three do cars for Audi dealerships so they can't be half bad. Time will tell, not picked the car up yet !

    Absolutely

Did a bit more research - globaltint do work with some south west dealers including the one I'm collecting my car from at the weekend.

I went back to my very local guy after work - he just finished a new VW Up!, and the local dealer courtesy drivers arrived to collect (I know the drivers having had my car serviced three weeks ago). Also a private owner BMW X3 waiting for collection , that looked equally good job - dot matrix edges well adhered etc. The guy has a A3 in Thursday first thing, being done for another main dealer and he's more than happy for me to call to see him doing it and inspect the finished job. Whilst I'm no expert on film qualities I can't fault the openness of the local guy.

Don't like it personally, creates a van look with just the rear half tinted IMO. And kind of pointless as normally you're sat in the front with an empty rear bench!

Standard factory tint is pretty much on the limit hence why you can't tint the front windows even with a very light tint. But if, for some reason, I felt the need to have my windows tinted, I'd go with a very light tint front and rear so it matched and wouldn't stand out.

All being well I'll be driving off in my new motor tomorrow morning - tint session is booked with my local guy for Tuesday afternoon. Think i'm going with 35% tint film as 20% film on top of the already tinted glass is too much IMO, and too obvious a contrast to the fronts. I may even go for 50% film yet - will try a few pieces on Tuesday to judge the final effect before giving the go ahead.

    Doh - I forgot !

went with 35% tint in the end - on top of the light tint of the standard tinted glass its plenty for me. And no need for a auto dimming rear view mirror now

I'm considering 25% rear windows, 30% rear quarters and 35% back so it blends in subtlety. Hopefully it will look good.
