What mileage has everyone's car done? When is enough enough?

Bit of a random question but my S3 is close to the 141k mileage mark and over the past 6 months I have started replacing tired parts in the engine bay. The latest edition is the huge pipe that connects to the air filter as it was old and the smaller pipes that come off it had collapsed. Also, I have a whine on my turbo but I'm hoping this is due to the pipe I'm waiting on.

Why I'm asking about mileage is is there a point where the engines become unreliable or if I keep looking after it, it should look after me sort of thing? The S3 is a decent car as everyone knows but the thought has crossed my mine to trade it in for a newer one due to the mileage...

Pic (not my actual engine) - http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/9234/non249.jpg

    Cheers

That's reassuring. Providing I can sort the turbo problem then I should be tip-top!

IMO you need to decide if you're in it for the long haul or get out now with your wallet intact!

Well my thoughts are to keep it and use it for a track car eventually, I can't see the resale value being too great the more miles I put on it.

mine is just about to hit 130k, and still pulls like a train, very well maintained and serviced.

but would rather buy a old high mileage car, then a old low mileage car.
that hardly gets used or does short journeys and never lets the engine get to temperature etc

and as s3mad_dude, mines on its original clutch still i believe

every 5 to 6 years or 60k i believe is the guide

but i think when you get to the 2nd change the tensioners should be done aswell. as they can fail. just my opinion

145k new clutch and turbo in 2011 at 130k, coolant expansion as clean as a whistle, never had a gonk put water in it by the looks of it! doesnt use much oil. think the valve stems are slightly going but only puffs after idling for 5 mins stationary then clears straight away? was unmodified tho when i got it in april 2013. i think the way its been treated and maintained means more than mileage... also what roads, motorway miles really arnt that bad as we all know. Being warmed and cooled gently.

mileage is a poor way to judge a car really...

Not directly related to the a3s but many moons ago I had a 99 1.8t vw Passat which had 190k on. The original turbo gave up and I decided to sell it. A farmer bought it 'sold as seen' and 5 years on I still see it in a village near where I live. Certainly over 200k on her now. Keep it serviced and it will look after you.

My wife's imola S3 (8L ) had only .... 38493 miles on it last January when we bought it, its now up to 47600 miles...

Just bought my wife's ex S3 in Decrmber with a blown turbo at 172k miles on it,

We're due to get it back this week after having a pretty good service consisting of:

Turbo refurbed by Ben @ The Turbo Unit with a strengthened bearing casing stronger bearings and thrust plate and completely new internals, only the cold and hot casing has been reused,
Timing belt with water pump & tentioner
Turbo oil feed pipe replaced since this was gunged up causing oil starvation to the bearings
    Cam cover gasket replaced
Spark plugs only 22k miles old but replaced
All the filters replaced inc the haldex filter & oil
    Fresh engine oil
Turbo induction pipe replaced since one of the branch pipes was held on with black tape !!!!
Replace the armrest bracket since that was broken !!

New registration number already issued and waiting to be fitted.

SO I wouldn't be concerned about mileage provided its got a good service history and regular oil and filter changed with good quality oil

... my urs4 has 239400 miles on it now ( turbo let go at 217000 miles) refurbed and all is fine since :)

At the end of the day, if you look after the car the engine will run & run. Sure, things wear out, but a well-looked-after high miler will always be preferable over a neglected low miler that's only been used to drive short frequent trips.

80k on a T plate. Drives spot on, feels like a new car. Serviced every 6k miles cambelt done 4k miles ago. Next service will consist of all filters, oil and haldex service. Plugs and cam cover / cam chain tensioner gaskets. Probably a coolant flush too. Looked after well, no reason why these cars won't carry on putting a smile on your face!
