Thought I'd revive this thread as we are thinking about another pup.
We've got a German shepherd and I always thought I'd stick the them as i think they are awesome. But as my house is a democracy and not a dictatorship ( or is it the other way around ....) I may be getting over ruled with the puppy options being opened to:
Alaskan malamute or a
Bernese mountain dog. Because I've to consider another dog I'm tempted by a Rottweiler.
Anyone got experience with either of these three breeds?

I can thoroughly recommend the Bernese Mountain Dog. Absolutely brilliant pets. Big gentle giants.
Our old one when he was 13 months old. Miss him loads.

Friend also has a Neapolitan Mastiff and it's also a great pet. Massive but again, very gentle.

Cheers- I've heard they can be stubborn which makes them hard(ish) to train?
I live in aberdeenshire, I was speaking to a couple at Dufftown Highland games on Saturday they had to go to near Penzance for a Bernese pup! Not the easiest pups to find but their dog was awesome and huge!!

He was great. We got him from Yorkshire. There are breeders just outside Larkhall and in Ayrshire.
Not the cheapest pups either but he was easy to train. They are working dogs so not that difficult. Not as intelligent as our first Bearded Collie but much much brighter than our current Portuguese Water Dog cross Collie. Thick as mince.

I've had a German Shepherd, a German shorthaired pointer and two Weimaraners over the years, I love all dogs so would be difficult to just pick one breed out. I miss not having a dog so much, but with the hours we work now it wouldn't be fair on the dog to be on it's own all day...but as soon as I retire I'll be a dog owner again
