what does the hockey puck do?

hi all

I carry out the simplify the PCV system and was wondering what does the hockey puck valve do as i can blow through it both ways ?

Any info would be great

Allows the top end to breathe by seperating the oil mist from the air as it passes through it I think.

My understanding is its basically a restrictor, it controls vacuum pressure in the crankcase by bleeding air thru under heavy vacuum.
