I know this may sound a bit intrusive, but as you know, replying is optional.

I just thought I'd ask because sometimes threads like these can be a real bonus. Life is difficult enough anyway and that pain in the arse problem you have some days and can't sort out may be dead easy for someone else. That someone else may be here and you may speak to that person on a regular basis but have no idea what it is they do.

Its often the way that when you find out what someone you know does for a living you think "wish i'd known that a week ago." Well here's your chance!

I'll start this thread off with what I do....

I run the technical department of a small telecoms company, I look after the installs and maintenance of other business' telephone systems and the carrying of their calls, VoIP etc. I've been in the industry for about 8 years.

I used to work with my Dad before that, and we fitted kitchens for a well known company, this really helped me in gaining experience in the building trade, and now the only thing I can't do proficiently is plaster!

Its true that knowing about the people you talk to is handy, on the Supra forum I used to talk on all the time, there was a couple of guys that started up their own company and asked me about a phone system. I had one that I'd "aquired" in my garage that was perfect for them so I sent it to them with the phones and all the instructions on how to set it up and it saved them a fortune by not getting ripped off by some unscrupulous company. Now they run a really sucessful parts importing co. and I like to think I helped them on their way!

I'm a business consultant working for a small company in central London. I spend my time working with County and District Councils across England trying to get them to do things more efficiently so that they can meet the Government's targets and can hopefully keep council tax rises to a minimum.

I'm also a qualified fitness instructor and used to teach spinning (think aerobics on an exercise bike) at my local gym.

Well, I, like A4Quattro work in the comms business - we are a Software house developing software for Cisco Call Manager, Cisco's VOIP solution.

I am a Technical Services Consultant for said Company, handling the operator consoles, ACD solutions, Voice messaging, Autoattendants, presence management and XML applications. I handle pretty much all stages from design, sales, integration, project management, installation and support. Currently based in our new Dallas office, but will be back in the UK in March.

I'm Research and Development manager for a computer firm based near Bolton. I look after the research, design and development of new products and services for the company; and manage special projects (ie. larger/growth/complex contracts, press/PR events etc.). It's a pretty interesting life for someone who grew up as a bit of a computer-geek, as I get to play with a lot of hush-hush toys, work on hush-hush contracts, and generally every day is different.

As a reasonably lucrative sideline I work as a Music Technology consultant to various people/outfits. Having said that, too much of the work is done on 'mate's rates' as a lot of it comes my way from mates made back in my producing/DJ'ing days. Which brings me neatly around to...

I guess that the three (or less!) degrees of separation thing is probably very true here; if you're established in cheese or trance that pretty much guarantees that we know some of the same people!

    Regards,

    Rob.

I work as a software developer for a company who operate a nationwide network of bill payment terminals in small retail outlets, like convenience stores and petrol stations. You can pay for utility bills, buy mobile phone top-ups, TV licences, bus tickets, congestion charge and make payments to hundreds of other companies. I'm part of a team that maintains the back-end systems.

Quite like it really! I'm lucky that the original Commodore 64 user manual came with programming examples, otherwise I'd never do what I do today! :)

I sit in front of a PC watching the clock making sure things happen on time for NCR.

Mainly I find myself ringing up our offices around the world whinging about why stuff hasn't happened on time and making threats. :gun2:

Nah, seriously; I coordinate engineers and parts on a global basis for both network customer and certain large retailers. Since I've been on nights I've more specifically been moving UK based resources around.

    It pays the rent.

I'm a commissioning engineer, used to spend my time constantly flying all over Europe, the Middle East and Far East working on gas power stations. Sounds glamorous but after ten years of hotels, work and airports it started to grind a little. Started my own company a few years ago and just finished a one year contract in Singapore as commissioning manager on a flue gas treatment system for an incinerator plant. Sounds like the same thing but a whole year in one place was heaven!

Currently doing a refurb on my Corrado including a complete engine rebuild and trying to retro fit climate control in it before the next contract starts. Looks like I'll fail as I have about one week remaining and a massive pile of bits overflowing the garage into the shed now, must dash :undwech:

    top thread A4quattro,

never considered how good these forums could be for networking, and not just the type many of you seem to be into...

I'm the Engineering Maintenance Manager for a Manufacturing company, I run a team of 43 multi-skilled Engineers who support routine operation and ongoing process improvement of the specialist automation process equipment and associated services and equipment for the world's third largest company in our sector.

We are also one of the few engineering/manufacturing companies in our area (Southampton) not downsizing/ moving abroad / shutdown! and are currently recruiting for experienced process support and installation engineers ideally with FMCG, Medical Device or Pharmaceutical manufacturing experience. But drive and capability even in other sectors equally useful,

Good package inc relocation is available PM me for more details,

    cheers
    Dan
