    Hi guys!

I am going to need a smallish diesel car for some high mileage and I was looking for some options but it seems there isn't any available just now!! Market seems stuck!!

I have an S3 which I will keep and trade for an M3 or AMG in the near future.

But I need a everyday car, diesel.
    My options:

    1 - Audi A3 2.0 TDI 140PS (should I reach for 170?) SLine
Problem is price goes to a good £24k with extras and it is a model soon to be replaced...

2 - Golf 2.0 TDI (same problem... to be replaced soon, cheaper though)

3 - Volvo C30 1.6D (seems a nice car but that back end.. still don't really like it)

4 - Ford Focus (just don't like Ford overall...)

5 - Renault Megane (I like the car but again a old model...)

    These are some examples...

I want a new car and my budget for this goes to £30k but ideally something in the reagion of £25k would be better.

If I do the same search in the upper class (A4, 3-Series) there aren't many options for my price range... maybe the new A4, a C Merc is expensive... But I would prefer a smaller car..

Wating for opinions and some help
    Pedro

Otherwise... I will spend my budget on 98 RON petrol! :)

Your choices and budget don't seem to match, Pedro.
If you have £25K to spend, why look at a C30 / Focus /Golf ?

Well bowfer as I want an hatchback, preferably, I was just counting in my head what was available... and after spec them up I think £25k won't be far off.

Having £25k does not mean I will spend all off it... lolol

What other options do you see that I might be missing?

    Thanks
    Pedro

If you are considering the C30 and Focus, you could also add the Mazda 3 to your list. Focus underpinnings, but probably better reliability.

For a 'premium' hatch, you could also consider the Merc B-Class.

I might hold a bit this buy and do some mileage on the S3 until something exciting shows up in the market... From all the hatckbacks I like the A3 but... already have one... difficult call this one

You'd have to gold plate a diesel Focus/Volvo C30/Golf to spend £25k Pedro!:)
If you really need a hatchback, I would look at a new Mondeo or a Volvo V50.
New Mondeo is really, really nice (with the right wheels).
I've always liked the V50 too (cracking Dolby stereos).
Honda Accord tourer? (maybe too big?)
    Honda Civic diesel?
    I like the Mazda 3.
The new Mazda 6 is getting good reviews too (think it's a hatchback)

When I bought my A4 it was a toss up between it and the V50, I think they are cracking cars.

    I agree.

The only downside with the C30/S40/V50 seems to be the depreciation - about 40% over 2 years. Ouch !

As always, based on full RRP (not having a pop at you)
You can negoitiate hefty discounts on Volvos, which helps the RV.

    Useful info

The S40 is on my list (along with Merc B) to try out next time, as a possible alternative to the A3. (I could do with 4 doors, hence not C30).

Volvo must think about a 5 door C30, sometime.
I would have considered one, definitely.
There was a photoshop one done, it looked great.

The only downside with a C30/S40/V50 is its a Volvo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lmfao:

Be careful with Volvo, as stated above; it sufferse hefty depreciation.

Yesterday my friend picked up a T reg S40 SE for £2600 :faint:

Yes its oldish BUT! it only had 56k fully stamped mileage and was in mint condition.

Thanks... this is still a thought in progress.. lolol

Volvos are not bad at all... and probably will be doing motorway mileage so I do not want a "racer" spec... I drove about 2 years ago and S80 T5 and it was nice car to drive...

I am not looking for a track day car so handling has to be OK but needn't be outstanding... But looking for a nice specced car... I think I will have a look on second hand car... although I would prefer new...

Maybe because of depreciation I can get a really good deal on a Volvo.

Yes, I don't understand why they are hit so badly on value.
The S40 is after all, basically a Focus, but one which is built properly !

So a '99 (T reg, which is the old shape) Volvo is £2600.
    So what?
You can get '99 Audi A3 diesels for £3000 on autorader, go check.
Chances are the Volvo cost less to buy, so chances are the actual real-life,depreciation is on a par with the Audi!

The old shape S40 was a terrible car.
Old technology, even when it was new.
You can't use their depreciation figures for the current S40/V50.
They're a quantum leap from the old ones.

When you said you were wanting a run about deisel I was thinking along the lines of a clio DCi or the likes lol

I wouldnt get an A3 since you have an S3 because I think you would be disappointed getting into it and possibly get very very bored of either car maybe being in and out of them day after day??

Golf GT would be a nice choice or............

2004 Seat Leon Cupra TDI - my mate just bought one last week and its an excellent car - 150bhp 1.9tdi

You can get a nice low mileage example for £8-10k (I know you are in Portugal)

What about a honda civic 2.2 cdti type s?

150bhp, nice, very modern looking, remap very well

I wouldn't bother with the Renault, I have a 57 plate Megane on my drive ready to take me to the airport, it seems sooooooo cheap inside, everything is so plasticy. The Focus is a good choice as a cheap car, as is the a3 but why spend 25k on one, why not have a larger budget and buy a 911 instead of the M3 and buy a cheap Mondeo diesel ?

Oh and the new mondeo on the ST stlye alloys - 20" in black with factory kit looks VERY nice.

Thing is I am between Portugal and UK all the time...

I have my S3 (which is LHD) in Portugal mostly for weekends and I need a RHD for the UK and that one is going to do most of everyday driving...

I can bering my S3 to UK (its UK registered) but I like to have it in Portugal for my hanging about..

    Pedro

Had a look on the C30 and actually it is a nice car... The Honda diesel engine I am not so sure...
