S3 Intercooler is usually what gets used, you will have to try and identify the IC you currently have. It may just be a issue with the map.

Ive been reading that the S3 one is the most common replacement but I can't find too much info on actually how well it reduces AITs over the stock one.

The map shouldn't need touching. It's just a case of working out a few calculations as to how much air my turbo flows and then finding a core and pipework that won't increase the capacity too much.

I suspect that the core on the car at the moment was too large or the pipework had leaks.

I refuse to pay the monies that Awesome wan't. I also refuse to pay over £200 for a used S3 cooler when I know I can get a universal core and pipework for around the same money.

After seeing the effects of the Toyosport core on the 8L S3 I'm more inclined to take a similar route and break the mould ;)

Cheers lads. Does this mean my fog lights and fog grills from my current 2004 double grill will fit this bumper?

I now need to source a single grill, a bonnet, a splitter, and a spoiler before heading to the body shop.

    Yep, they'll fit no probs.

Speaking from experience though, I'd go for the s-line front bumper. It's harder to get and you'll need new fogs/fog grilles too but the end result is much nicer.

You'll need to swap the rear bumper to an s-line bumper or a standard 2009 onwards rear bumper to lose the rub strips at the back too... but again, a much better result for not a huge amount of extra money.

In you haven't already, have a look at my thread (linked in my sig) to see the comparison between the two.

Cheers Ads. I'm trying my hardest to keep the car spending to a minimum. The whole point of this car was to save money but I keep seeing nice cars on here.

This bumper came from the previous owner of my car a he had it but never got round to sorting it all out. I've seen a full s line bumper, fogs, and grills available but i don't really want to splash the cash.

I hear you.... but if you're anything like me then after a while of seeing A3s with s-line fronts etc then your standard/sport front with rub strips will start to annoy the HELL out of you.

Is the bumper you have already painted in the correct colour?? That's where the expense comes really. The cost of parts isn't so big.
Adding a couple of bumpers to the equation should set you back a couple of hundred more, plus a bit more on the body shop cost. Seems a shame to do the bonnet, spoiler etc and not spend that bit more on "nicer" bumpers.

    Maybe that's just me though.

You're a bad mad Ad! I currently have eBay searches setup for most SLine stuff now anyway.

The bumper above isn't in the correct colour so will need painting. I don't want to spend £1000ish on all the parts and painting when the car is already on nearly 150k miles with me putting 25k a year on it. It might only last me 2 years and then I'd look for a full SLine to replace it.

I'll take a loom through your thread and see what I think then ;)

Just read it all and noted all part numbers. I'll have a little look about. I did notice that you've not done side skirts, any reason?

A couple of reasons..... It's only the S3 that has side skirts and they probably wouldn't run flush with the 'less deep/low' s-line bumpers. Also they're a b*tch to get hold of and I think quite a b*tch to fit.

Also I don suppose you know the part number of your bonnet as I know I need one to match the single grill.

If I'm honest, after looking through your thread I think I'd be able to with my car with the single grill'd sport bumper with a splitter then an S-Line spoiler. it just needs a bit of tidying up. Obviously if the bumpers pop up in eBay for a bargain I'll grab them.

Haven't go a clue about the part number of the bonnet. Gotta be careful when buying, the cross over is 2005 I think, but you'll find some will be from a split grille and some from a single. Finding the correct bonnet is a bit of a minefield... a few times on here people have been misinformed by the seller and ended up with the wrong one.

Always try to ask how many doors the car had that the bonnet came off of... if it came off of a 5 door then you're definitely safe as all 5drs are single grille.

    Dear Fred,

Diesels will infact run silly boost pressures and cylinder presssure as thats how they work. Therefore your comparison of AITs from the 1.8t is a little uncomparible.
High pressures = high heat. At 1.5x the boost of the beloved 1.8t motor you are very unlikely to achieve the same temps above ambient as the 1.8t.
The figures you've got i wouldnt worry too much at all. Not unless you can feel power being sucked away. in which case you're ****ed and will have to sell up and buy another S3.

    Much love

That's the first logical answer I've read since I've been here reading about dervs, boost pressure, and cooling. Good man Karlos.

Another failed attempt to lower the car! Even with spring compressors I still couldn't get the springs out to adjust them. I can't compress the spring enough.

I'm thinking that if I detach one end of the shock then the rear arm should come down enough to free the spring. It's just started raining so it'll have to wait.

Undo the bolt that holds the lower arm to the hub, looks like there's no tension there anyway as that adjuster doesn't look like its touching the chassis

That's right, there's no tension in the spring like that but just not enough room to get the spring out. Proper PITA. Thought these things were meant to be quick and easy to adjust lol.

It is quick and easy, you gotta undo the bolt to the lower arm on the hub, then you can pull the lower arm down by hand and pull the spring out.

It's very easy when you do it this way.

Then, once you've wound it all the way down, put the spring and adjuster back in and there will be so little tension on the spring you'll be able to put the bolt for the lower arm back in the hub easily.

VWVortex.com - Koni Coilover Install DIY

scroll down to where they do the rear and you'll see what I mean by removing the bolt and lowering the arm.

I wanted a s line conversion but again didn't have the funds. However I did have the money for a seat Leon cupra front splitter...and I loved that look! If you're looking for a single grill let me know. I have a standard one for sale which is cheap.

Took me 50 minutes to do both sides. As you can see the drivers side is a fair bit (10mm ish) lower then the passenger side which I'm hoping is just due to the surface of my drive. I'll keep an eye on this tomorrow in the flat carpark at work. Might need adjusting again otherwise.

With regards to the AP's sitting lower at one side than the other, it's the same on my car. I've got the adjuster sat higher on one side than the other so it sits level.

Do what I did, just get your car on a flat surface and measure from floor to top of the arch. If it sits 5mm higher on one side, just adjust the other side to suit then you definitely know its same both sides.

why would any one fit that intercooler it has a smaller surface area than the stock one so in theory = less cooling plus dare I say it is a smaller volume so less air . seems backwards unless you have massive turbo lag your trying to cure?

was it even plumbed in ? would be interested if it did make a difference it looks more like for a mk4 platform tdi than a mk5 as the mk4's have small ones on the side if I am correct and there the same as my old superb

No it wasn't plumbed in. It was at one point but apparently gave lag issues so the original FMIC was plumbed back in. I thought as the bumper was off I'd remove it.

Why larger ? The stock one is huge . The s3 one isn't even bigger if I remember . Just ally end caps . Same volume . Only difference o could see would be colder air if it's in front of the rad and work fans on

Because I want the best performance and I don't believe the S3 core offers enough cooling for a hybrid turbo on a TDI.

And that's why darkide use them with 300bhp cars ? ..... The things huge the plastic end caps and the hose work is the weak point . The core itself ishuge I'd even dare say that the intercooleris one of the biggest stock fittement ones ove ever seen / used

I've asked in another thread for some AIT figures from people with the S3 core but nobody has provided me any. If I can see some hard evidence I'd be persuaded to get one.
