Yeah.... Sucks I know but that's the way it is. I was tempted to fire it up after the turbo was freed up but the amount of play in it says to me it will just do it again, and I couldn't sell it like that with a good conscience.

Won't be ordering turbo today either as I forgot my bloody wallet this morning! D'oh!

Think the hair line cracks are anything to worry about or can exhaust paste be used to fiill them (joking)

What you need is a hammer my friend.... the 'Gentle Persuasion Tool'.

I was thinking more along the lines of Mastic or Decorator's Caulk... Flexible gap filler should easily cope with EGTs....

And you can paint the flexible gap filler with emulsion

Welly, do you do private work? You seem to be a lot more competent than any mechanic down here.

Seriously, what are your rates?

    Depends what for pal!! lol.

Seriously though, not really to be honest mate, it's a hobby, not a profession. Something I've always had a keen interest in.

To be honest, rebuilding my S3 was the first big project I've ever done, and certainly my first experience with bottom end work. But, as with everything else, it's just nuts and bolts, done up together in the right order to the right torque.

I work in IT by day, and have my head under bonnets at night. I like to keep busy with projects though, there isn't much to do round these parts. The Cotswolds are beautiful, but also boring.

    OK, productive evening.

Got that b*stard bolt out of the turbo support bracket by hammering a multi spline bit into it and then cracking it off. Thank god. I must admit I though the bolt head was going to have to be cut off, which I wanted avoid.

Turbo is out and now in my garage - not looking too bad. Something (two photos below hoping that someone might know what it is!) fell out of the hot side of the turbo on removal. I'm assuming it's an integral part of the turbo. Either that or it's a foreign object which has been jamming the turbo. Also, the hot side blades are touching on the casing at one point, indicating to me that the shaft may be bent. Either way - it's ill.

That I moved on to stealing the strut brace off of it, and fitting it to the Yellow S3. It's only temporary and will be replaced since I've ordered one off of the bay, just wanted to know what the differnce is! I haven't taken it out yet, but will report on that.

So, just waiting to order replacement parts now and then reassembly can commence. :icon_thumright:

    Whats needed:

K04, Banjo washers, Turbo oil return line gasket, Turbo - Manifold Gasket, Turbo - Downpipe Gasket, Turbo - Manifold Bolts, Head Gasket, Head Bolts, Cambelt Kit, Rocker Cover Gasket.

Hopefully less than £500 on parts. Fingers crossed.

    Photos from tonight:

That random object looks a bit odd. I'm no genius when it comes to turbos but I'd hazard a guess thats whats whats bent the shaft on it. No idea what it is though, if it was the cold side you could put it down to something falling into the tip......odd because its not going to have made it through the turbo without destroying it I'd have thought?

Well, this car has had a new engine late last year costing the owner that I bought it off £2500 odd. I've got the receipt. Not knowing what happened to the previous engine, it could of been in there since then....

I think that someone was using the engine for target practice - looks like a bullet :)

Must say, this thread makes for some great reading!

In my honest mechanical opinion, that piece looks like a finger from the morgue. Lol, thats the first thing that came to my head.

:haha:Like Peedman says, I was thinking exactly the same about the fingers! Either that or it's one of Hannibal from the A-teams Cigars...

Having rebuilt a few turbo's can say for sure it's not an intergral part of a K04 turbo...What's it made out of?

Yeah, I don't think it's a K04 part either. It's made of metal I think, but I couldn't find my magnet to check! The piece is about 6 mm in length and 2 mm wide.

In the words of Terry Tibbs, 'Fack knows'. Weird though!

I'm going to second the finger tip suggestion but it looks like its off a mummy or something...they dont go that colour in the morgue!

i think THE OBJECT must have started out in the turbo. can you imagine the mechanical mayhem that it would have cuased it if had had to pass through the engine at any point?

is the wastegate mech all still in tact? ive heard of the waste gate penny dropping off before etc

Turbo, apart from shaft play is in A1 condition - no cracks at all.

I thought the same, it must of been in there. There is no compressor side damage meaning it hasn't come through the engine. Well, not through the air filter system at least!

    Na....

The reason being that this turbo is in really good nick. I want to keep it to send in as an exchange item when I get my turbo Stage 4 hybridsed......

That's a plan so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a weasel....

Well, since there is nothing else to do to the motor until parts arrive I thought I'd get the little one to test out the steering and gear linkage.

you could have put a NEEsarn SR20 lump in there but they probably pull quite a premium the night before race wars

Has the turbo you removed got an EGT probe? if not you may need a blanking plug for the turbo you have bought if it is indeed from an AMK S3 as they have EGT probes :)

Humm... yet another ebay description thats as accurate as my cat with a sniper rifle....

Fingers crossed mate but be prepared... if it really came of an AMK engine then it will have provision for an EGT prope... Bill can get you a plug machined up I expect... be the same as the one I will be using to bung the hole in my exhaust mani when I move my EGT probe...
