Eeeek, hate hail stones... Feel for you...

On the other hand I had a lovely day in NI yesterday, cars washed on Saturday eve and are still dry.... how's that work?

Warren, on the fuel front, I've swapped the Corsa from Tesco Unleaded to Maxol and it's running loads better. With 85 ponies, you notice the difference! The guys in Vauxhall suggested changing as they've seen Tesco fuelled cars misfiring and all sorts. Guess they were right.
Also MPG has increased by 3-4 over a tank....

With how easily the paint chips on my car ... I am genuinely concerned in case the hail has chipped the paint at all as the hail stones were some of the biggest I have ever seen and they were coming down with some force although they won't be jagged like stones so hopefully ok.

Cleaning cars in Britain is a thankless task. Your handy work can be ruined in minutes without turning a wheel. Thankfully when it was supposed to hail I was sat in Reading city centre with Shrek and his better half scoffing a burger outdoors in blazing sunshine. It had hammered it down all morning and then when we got their the sun shone on the righteous!

There was something a few years ago I seem to recall where even brand new cars were written off because a hail storm had dented and damaged every single panel.

Edit: Link to the story here...

I don't know about the righteous but it did turn out bloody nice in the end!

Thankfully the car - paint, panels & windows were all ok !

So the paint is $hit thin and bad for chipping - but it can resist hail stones :)

Which is strange as Audi paint is one of the toughest in the industry... Guess no one can do anything about a stone flying at you at 70mph!

Seriously Adam, for the few miles I do and I DO NOT get close to cars in front at all, I am amazed at the number of little stone chips my bonnet has.

Don't get me wrong, its not loads and the untrained eye from a distance won't see them - its only when you get up close, but the number of chips is something I notice with this car, but I never used to monitor them AT ALL with my last car, the TTS and that was black - so I am thinking this estoril paint may be particularly soft.

Maybe their crystal finish just wasn't high enough quality. Perhaps that's why mine was easily damaged by the dealership as well.

Possibly .... although the panther black on my TTS was 'crystal effect' too.

As you will know having estoril on your 'temporary' car ... the colour / shade change of the paint on a dull day / sunny day is quite dramatic - more so than I have noticed on any other paint finish, so maybe the make up of the paint which enables that effect somehow contributes also.

Perhaps you're right. We should consult a paint specialist

I think most/all swirl marks etc occur to the clear coat rather than the underlying paint itself. My understanding is that you have a base-coat, then your colour (e.g. Estoril/Sepang) then a clear coat on top. Audi, supposedly, have one of the 'hardest' clearcoats around. Not sure what the advantages of that are supposed to be but as far as I can see it makes it harder to work on.

In theory then I wouldn't have thought that the paint itself would be any more or less prone to stone chips as such. That said I guess it is possible the crystal effect in combination with the Estoril blue highlights certain imperfections under certain light. Certainly I can see on mine there are more marks than I had anticipated (maybe a dealer wash did this - I know I didn't ask them to, but they didn't ask either and got back and it had been washed, maybe it was me).

I can see 'a few' minor scratches on mine - from washing.

Nothing serious - and again to the normal none ocd car owner - they probably wouldn't even notice them but I do.
I am very careful washing my car - use high quality mits / 2 bucket / drying towels / shampoo & rinse ... but still pick up some surface scratching.

Again, I believe this is down to the pint being VERY soft and / or the shade of colour (dark blue).

Either way, I am not that hung about it - its a minor annoyance and far from a major issue.

See I know what you're saying about the paint but my first car was a dark blue as well and I never had trouble with it. And that was a Peugeot!

I think for me the major annoyance is that the dealership did it - if it was through my own fault then I'd accept it.

I've never had to be OCD about my paintwork until this car! Then again it's by far the most money I've ever spent on a car too.

Apologies to Warren for hijacking this thread!

Agree mate ... as I mentioned previous - the estoril should not be any worse than black, but IMO it is for sure !

I am going silver on my next car lol :)

Shoulda bought proper colour then it would have been coolio inglesias :moa:

I was looking at my paint earlier and I think the fix of my gaze caused a swirl mark ;-)

How can the supposedly hardest clear coat on the market be so easy to mark but so hard to polish out!

Warren, I read on another forum that the soundaktor affects the quality of the B&O system as the soundaktor is actually still working in comfort mode - just on a less aggressive volume. Perhaps we should try pulling the fuse and see if there is any improvement?

    I reckon Warren's got a dodgy B&O lol :)

The estoril cars might have wafer thin paint that you could almost lick off but they were fitted with none faulty speakers ... which were saved for phantom cars :p

I've managed to make my system sound slightly less offensive by:

    1) In the DSP I set the speakers to front. I'm assuming the front speakers are probably better quality than the rears as they often seem to be in VAG cars.
    2) Turned 'Surround Sound' in audio to OFF / 0
    3) Turned the BASS up about 4 clicks from 12pm
    4) Turned the TREBLE up about 2 clicks from 12pm
    5) Turned GALA off

I take your point on the Soundaktor as it must cause some level of crossover onto the audio system, but until I get an Akropovich slide on system and get the air intake changed the soundaktor is one of the few bits of (albeit artificial) drama I get!

I've just bought a new Estoril S3 and they dealer f- up the clear coat on delivery, after fighting for some money towards a detailer to fix the problem I am booked in for the poaint correction in July.... long wait.

Out of the 3 detailers I spoke to they all shuddered when I said A3 as they have VERY soft paint (like Honda paint) to quote one of them, and they all said that Estoril blue crystal is a pain the a$$ and don't wash it until I get it corrected and a silicon coating put ontop of the clear coat.

I googled Estoril blue and there are loads of forum hits about how bad it chips & scratches just by looking at it!! :crying:

I really do think that must be a contributor to why estoril has had such a short limited run.
... its a fantastic colour but bonnet chipping is a nightmare and thinking about it, all my battle damage is limited to the bonnet.
I am guessing the bumpers if they are plastic though may be black in colour so at least chips there will be less noticeable.

I know it's rubbish that all my previous Audi's have never needed paint correction as I tend to use good wash/wax cleaning processes but it seems crystal paint is pants... probably why they have stop Estoril as a paint!

Estoril Blue - soft clear coat - myAUDIQ5 forum

How am I supposed to wash Estoril Blue Crystal without scratching it???

So I am really paranoid at the moment, Suzuka grey was MUCH easier to keep nice.

    AUDIO UPDATE

One other thing on the audio scenario.

Last night I was testing for vibrations and I found that the rear boot light was vibrating slightly with the sub. It was a ridiculous location for it really given the proximity to the speakers and propensity to vibrate.

What I've done is get some silver duck tape and I've lined the edge of the hole that the light sits in with it. This means it's a very tight fit, but there will be no resonance between the light housing and the metal framework of the parcel shelf. Straight away I've noted a less wasp sound coming from the back, so whilst many of the legacy issues still stand the slightly irking buzz I was getting from the bass appears to be less pronounced.

Just covered 380 miles myself today.

    Early start and late home.

    Car was immense though.

Supreme comfort this morning and longer trip due to time of day and traffic ... Trip home tonight leaving late allowed for clear roads and 'spirited' driving at true S5 cruising speeds :)

Again car was brilliant, great getting the power down and cruising at erm .... 70 mph !!!!!

Mpg was shizer though lol - I quickly looked once then not again :)

This was about sunny evening drive covering near on 200 miles home in comfort and enjoying it.
    (and erm doing it 'swiftly')

    Go S5 express :)

    Love it .... a great car !

I'll tell you - the car is amazing especially when you're at about 65 accelerating alllll the way up to the max speed of 70. Simply exhilarating!

Its time like last night, you can truly appreciate the car.

You've an early start - long day - and have a late journey home - but the car gets home in comfort, very rapidly, safely, but also in a very enjoyable way - you can't beat a clear road, no traffic hold ups, being to breeeeeeeeze past vistually anything.

Put it this way - yes there was a lot more traffic in the morning and some hold ups, but the trip home was over an hour less :) :racer:

    Absolutely :icon_thumright:

65 mph all the way up to 70 mph is just great isn't it :)

The car devours miles with ease when you have a clear road that is for sure (as well as petrol ha ha).

S5 power / s tronic / cruise / super sports seats / great sound track - and it is good when you boot it no question :music:
