Been looking at these for a while now, was wondering if anyone could give us some pointers with the common problem etc.
What should you be paying for them and if anyone has one for sale would be very interested in the details of it.

dont be afraid of a few miles on them as most have up to/over 150k on them now, but the looked after ones arn't common......
look for tidy body work and clean interiors, look for good service history. recent cambelt change.

things to look out for would be knocking front suspension and wheel bearing noise. apart from that just normal car type stuff you look at normally.

price wise 1200 for one with a few miles on it and a bit tatty round the edges.
up to 2k really, for a very tidy sub 100k car.

Any particular reason it has to be a B5? Don't get me wrong - I love the B5 shape (proud owner of B5 2001 2.5 TDI quattro avant sport), aka Amtrak locomotive! The 1.9 TDI quattro avant is a rare beast indeed. Any decent examples are going to be high mileage, although that shouldn't put you off. I'd be inclined to widen your search to include B6 models... otherwise your quest could be like searching for the Holy Grail!

This is local to me for example 2002 Audi A4 1.9 TDI 130 QUATTRO SPORT 5DR :racer:

Yeh, made worse because they only made quattro 1.9 tdi's on pre-facelift B5's, after the facelift only the 2.5 was available in quattro.
