What tools do people use to get at the mani to turbo nuts? I've got the easy one off with a socket, can get a spanner on the rear on but can't gat a turn on it. And as for the hidden nut under runner number 1 :banghead:

    Prawn's the man!

What you need to do is buy a set of spanners and then grind them down to little twiglets and hope for the best.

You’ve found the easy one with the socket, leave that done up, as it’ll hold the weight of the turbo making the others easier to spin off.

The hard one for me has always been the back most bolt with the slotted hole, as access is very tight and the collector stops you getting much in there. For that one I use a cut down 17mm C-spanner with the head ground down to make it thinner in every dimension, as well as cutting it in half length ways. it does the job nicely, although I often need to use levers on it to get enough purchase.

Believe it or not, the one under the runners is actually really easy if you remove your downpipe.

Take the downpipe out, then use the two nut method to remove the top most DP stud from the turbo housing, and that gives you enough angular clearance (check me out with my fancy words) to get a regular C or Ring spanner up under the runners and onto the nut. Oddly, despite looking the hardest, it’s easy with the top stud removed. Leaving the top stud in makes the angle too tight and a spanner won’t go in :)You’ve found the easy one with the socket, leave that done up, as it’ll hold the weight of the turbo making the others easier to spin off.

Fitted it all when the engine was out! It is stud and nut combo. I can get a bent spanner on the hidden nut but I don't have the leverage to loosen it. Might have to remove the DP to get room!

My main issue is I don't have the right tools and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Going to see if the local garage has anything.

undo your dogbone mount and see if you can leverage the engine forward and support it there to give you a little more room.
    every little helps.

It's at home now mate in my garage and I've stripped it down to try and get at the mani bolts but I'm close to giving up! I don't have the tools to grind down spanners so I'm a little stuck. Also the bloody prop shaft just makes this job so difficult :(

Not the best time to start your head gasket collection although you still have some way to go to beat Welly...

I am going to replace the head bolts with ARP ones next time mine is off.... gaskets are cheap enough but replacing headbolts every time is heart breaking

Friend of mine had engine destruction and talked with guy from JNL racing, and he said:

"Not fan of arp's on 1.8t engines they lift with too much ignition timing. I have another customer that had build his engine himself runs 9.8 quarter mile times. He had cyl 3 crack as head lifted on arp from too much ignition timing on race fuel. Before then running less power with stock fuel and using nitrous and ran like that for 2yrs. Race fuel was fine on dyno then 3rd quarter mile run and bang. So he's now dropped engine to me to build."

I assume that the head expands (aluminium) but the block doesn't (cast steel) and that would cause that..

I'm thinking that, surely if det is causing head lift it would mean it's not been timed and mapped right. :readit:

"Before then running less power with stock fuel and using nitrous and ran like that for 2yrs." just screams to me that somebody who didn't know what they were doing mapped it for high octane and NOS.

    Sense that does not make.

I've given up mate. I need to drop the car somewhere to do the mani for me cause I don't want the ballache! I might as well buy a V3 mani and all the bits I need and dump it all of at a garage. It's either that or I sell the thing.

    What happened to you?

You don't seen Prawn selling up after his little crash, Paul selling up cause...........I don't follow his thread that much but you get the point.

    It's not like it's blown up, it's a *** manifold issue.

nor when i fully rebuilt my engine got it back together then it dropped an exhaust valve after half an hour of running.

there is no way you can sell it ! we wont let you.

but if you do want to swap for an a3 with no problems other than a knackered lamba sensor you know where i am ;)

My issues is I'm 50 miles from work with no spare car, having to borrow a family members car for the rest of the week. I don't have the expendable income I had before I bought a 4 bed house and my gf is starting to get fed up with the grief too. A V3 mani and all the parts needed to remove the head is goin to set me back another £400 on top of the £400 I spent last weekend. Just can't be arsed with the hassle at the moment.

I'm currently weighing up my options!

Shove the S3 in the garage.
Buy a TDI and save up for it.

You're in the same situation as the rest of us who only has one car and lives on our own.

Man up and deal with it dude.

You don seem to be listening! A cheap TDI will still be £500 to buy a shed then I've got to insure it and tax it and what's to say that won't have issues too! I could have dealt with this if it was 6 months down the line but as its been 2 days after a £400 remap I'm a little fcked.

    Harsh reality time.

Didnt you think of these issues when you were going down this route? You've used a manifold thats known for cracking, and have an absolutely maxed out turbo installation... When you max **** out, it breaks.

You either a) accept that it might break but its worth it and/or have a second car you can fall back on when it does, or b) realise that you rely on the car to do 100miles a day, have responsibilities (ie life/house/family/GF etc) and build the car in such a way that its reliable and lasts.

Now its broken and your throwing your toys out the pram and saying your going to sell up, no doubt losing thousands of pounds that you've shovelled into it so far... Clearly you need to step back and approach this with an adult head!

    Cheap solution:
If you have no money, refit the standard manifold, and unplug the N75.

    I am.

    £500 for a shed?
Damn, I use to pick up sheds for £50-£150. drive them for 6months, if they fell apart or failed the MOT, scrap it and buy another one.
While my Car/s was in the garage getting work done to them ready for the time I had the money to get them back on the road.

Spend a little now and save more in the future or something like that.

Why dont people chip in a few pence and go round his house and we all smash the new manifold on in time for ADI instead of drive him into further car related depression lol. Im already doing what i can on parts so its just someone to help do it so Westy doesnt crack out the meth and matches.

I've got a great solution Westicles.

I've got a lovely A3 on the drive at the moment, with £500 spent it'll have the same power to weight as your S3 and will probably wipe the floor with it. This ones got ESP too; so no complaints about not being able to put the power down.

You're going to have to take a K04 off ANYWAY, so I'll give you the A3 and the £500 for you to buy the K04 setup off Aaron. And you can give me the S3.

That way everybody's a winner, I'd be doing you a favor in reality.

I got some crystals.............................Not what you mean?

I can only offer hugs, reach arounds and pasties for him to smash at ADI.
I would offer spanner time but I'm to far away and I have a job to do.
