Fitted my R32 ARB tonight. Nice easy job, and here's some pics for anyone wanting to try it:
Car jacked and on stands:
Un did both rear drop links:
Undid 2 bolts each side of the backbox that hold it up:
You may find that a lot of the bolts and holes in the heat shield are corroded away and I had one bit fixed last year by my local exhaust place.
When I picked the car up from them the guy told me he had to "weld a custom bracket" to fix it........ this is what I found:
"custom". Ok I''ll give you that, but "bracket" WTF! This is a piece of plate metal with a nut on it. There appears to be a piece of coat hanger that has been welded onto the plate so the guy could hold it still while he but the bolt into the thread!!!! Anyway it works and he only charged me £5 but I wont be using them again!
With the heatshield and exhaust brackets loose there is just a centre exhaust rubber holding it all up, Tack this off the mid section and prop up the back box:
Now unbolt the 2 screws each side that hold the ARB brackets on:
You can then remove the ARB:
The new 19mm Golf R32 bar next to the standard 15mm bar:
New poly bushes to go on the new bar:
New bar bushed up and ready to go back on:
Back on car. Refit the same as removal:
Just as I went to take the car for a spin it started to lightly rain so I started off taking it easy. I found a few big roundabouts that I know what the cars limits are round it. I was amazed that even in the wet it was very reluctant to understeer at all! I'm sure I've had understeer in the dry at the speeds I just went around in the wet!!! Very impressed.
Cant wait to see the difference on track at Brands Hatch in January.
