Very quick q guys I'm at audi picking out s3 up.

It's a March 2011 car and the sat nav doesn't have a gloss surround
Denoting an older unit
Is this correct ?

You can check your firmware and hardware from the RNSE itself, just hit the info or car button (can't remember which one it is)

yes, all the mark 2 RNS-E (the newer one) has glossy/piano black surround on the screen as far as i know

I'm having them scan the car to check. It's a Matte black surround. Making sure Its the original unit from when the car was built

What features does the newer RNSE have that the older units lack?

I believe ability for optical parking assist... One of my planned retro fits

as far as i know the older unit is all the same shade of matte black, i.e. everything is made from the same material and has the same finish

the newer unit is identical but the screen has a glossy black surround

i don't have an exhaustive list but the newer unit will take larger capacity SD cards

Would a March 2011 car get the older unit as standard though? I would have assumed it would get the mk2 unit

Sounds like I'm being fussy but smells a bit fishy. IE it's had a replacement possibly after theft of original etc?

Ok it has a cd/tv button. That's not right is it for a 2011 car!?

not all 2011 had the mk2

my bros 2011 has the mk1 from factory but my mk2 didn't have the gloss surround.

take a quick pic and post

Ok well there goes my optical parking plan. Can I still fit the ami system?

I have vcds now, is there a way I can check the nav unit is the one that came with the car off the production line?

Not all 193's had a gloss surround, easy way to tell MK1 from a MK2 is that the MK1 has a CD/TV button whereas the MK2 has a Media button.

Mk1 does not support AMI or OPS.

If it is a genuine production fit then I just have to deal with it. IF its not, then I wonder if I have recourse with audi (approved audi supplied car)

Just did a scan btw, and it threw up these faults... Im confused. The car has no CD changer or media player... why is it looking for one?

also there are no bose logos on the speaker grilles, Bose is standard in black editions right!?

Mk2 RNSE's all have the media button BUT can be either matt or gloss surround, my MY10 has a matt mk2 fitted from the factory
Sounds like the car is incorrectly coded, for whatever reason, but my guess is that the rnse in now is not original.
Does the glovebox have a hole where a cd changer or ami should be?

There's 2 empty slots in the glovebox next to the airbag key

Looks like its been coded to have a cd changer/ipod dock/ami in glove box, if none of these exist then i would guess its been retrofitted and not coded correctly. This is due to a lot of people saying that RNSE's dont need coding which is a load of bull.

I think it came from a car that had a CD changer/Ipod dock and they just put it in this S3 to add value

When you say empty slots, do you mean proper cubby holes or can you see right through to behind the dash?

Bose is standard on a Black Edition.. sounds like you may have a bit of a Frankenstein creation :)

Yes I thought Bose was standard. Not happy, will be speaking to them Monday and more than likely the car will be going back to them!
