newbie - I'm considering purchasing a 2.5tdi A4 either 163 or 180

is there any mechanical difference between the 163bhp and the 180bhp engine (i.e larger turbo, injectors etc) or is it just the same engine with a different map

it appears that the 163 can be remapped to almost the same output as the 180 which would suggest the mechanicals of the engine are the same ?

the 163 is the same as the 150 bar mapping.

the 180 has a huge list of different bits.
ill see if i can find it.

Primary Differences:

Heads
Intake Valves
Exhaust Valves
Camshafts
Roller-Rockers (150HP & 163HP has cam followers)
Cam Belt and rollers
Oil Cooler
Mass-air Meter
Injection Pump
Injectors
Vacuum Pump
Turbocharger
Intercoolers (Left and Right)
Motor Mounts (Active)
Fuel Lines
Fuel Cooler
Engine Computer

excellant - thanks for that

in that case its probably worth going for the 180 then !

Looking for a 2.5 diesel quattro so sorry to drag this post back up, but how can you tell the difference between the 150, 163 and 180 and the quattro from normal?

Never bought an A6 before :)

Cheers

AFAIK, all recent (not the latest A6) 2.5TDI Quattros are 180bhp. 150 and 163 are FWD only. However I'm not sure about the previous model A6/100

Easiest way to tell is look at the sticker beside the spare wheel in the boot. It'll have the engine's KW rating which is approximately 0.73 of the BHP rating so 110KW = 150BHP, 120KW = 163BHP and 132KW = 180BHP. Quattro will have a propshaft under the car going to the rear wheels :)
