Going by the manual my air bags are due renewal.

I'm not going to give the car to Audi and ask them to replace the air bags as per the manual but It got my thinking.

How does this effect the airbags during a crash, the insurance or the MOT?

P.S. Any one got any idea how much it would be to replace the steering wheel airbag, dash board airbag and the two side impact airbags?

Probably cost more than an old A4 now!

Best to just avoid crashing I'd say. :)

From an automotive engineering point of view, it a reassurance it will fire when it should. As both the Charge and fabric of the bag itself will have a shelf life and degrade over time, as will anything really...

It's going to be impractical to replace them. As suggested - the cost is going to outweigh the value of the car once you've added labour costs, clear error codes, etc. Regards MOT - as long as the airbag lights aren't on, then I don't see this being an issue... not unless DVLA add new regulations in the coming years regards expiry dates for these sort of devices.

Also - what about the side airbags? Are they sewn in side backrest? This is on Ebay just now for a B6. Part number 8E0 880 242 G 6PS. £249.99 new from Audi. NEW GENUINE AUDI A4 B6 RIGHT SEAT AIRBAG 8E0 880 242 G | eBay

You should be ok if their not too long out of date - sniff them first to see if they're smelly. Also remember there is 'use by' and 'best before'.
I use this method on a daily basis for sandwiches and underwear and it's done me no harm.
I would suggest you hurry up and crash, then the bags will deploy and you can replace them .

Should try phoning the insurance to "claim" for the work, that would be an interesting call! :whistle2:

I'll just do my best not to crash.

Main worry if the DVLA or the EU starts trying to make it in to the MOT.
That will be another thing to kill off old cars.

It will be like an amnesty for cars with out-of-date airbags. Okay if the government introduce another scrappage initiative... although I'm sure the old girl (that's the B5, not the wife) would never forgive me!

If that happened you could just remove them and plug the lights.
