Recently got an A3 1.6 sport 2002. When i bought it i noticed there was a slight uneven tickover, i didnt think anything of it, just thought it needed a good service.

However I have now noticed that when the car gets warm and i pull up to a set of traffic lights for instance, the revs go up and down between 1000 and 2000 for about five seconds before they settle down.

I went to a local audi specialist yesterday and he said that because the throttle is electric instead of cable then the throttle body gets dirty and it just needs a clean. Just wonderin if anyone could give me some advice on this.

Regards

Tim

Yep, dirty throttle body.

Just take the intake hose off and spray some carb cleaner in there, hold a rag under it for when all the cruddy black cleaner pours back out though!.

cheers mate thanks alot, just wonderin which is the intake hose, is it the large one?

Big rubber one at the front left of of the engine bay (as you look at it). Connects to the intake manifold by the throttle...

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but if you catch the butterfly valve and move it doesnt it need to realigned with vagcom?

It does need realignment, but you can also remove the battery for a few minutes and it will do the same thing.

now im confused , can somebody just run me through the steps of what to do, this butterfly valve thing has opened a new can of worms.

As said above, when you look at the engine bay you will see a rubber hose come up on the front left of the engine bay. Pop that off and spray the cleaner in.

My butterfly was fine afterwards so its nothing to worry about :)

i undersand that part mate, just finding it hard to find which hose it is, when i look into the engine bay there is numerous amounts of hoses. I cleaned the hose out today which goes from the air filter as i thought this was the right one. Turns out it isnt :( Just need a bit more detail to distinguish which one it is, ie. how big is it and where does it go from and to.

Very much appreciated mate
Cheers
Tim

This is the hose on an S3, but I'd guess the 1.6 can't be much different...

I presumed that it was the metal part which the air intake pipe connects to. I have cleaned that pipe out but still no difference. This is the picture without the cover on. I appreciate your help guys.

Sorry, it quite different isn't it!

The butterfly valve should be in the bit that is arrowed, so I think you were in the right place.

yes it is mate, now is it the thick pipe to the right of it cus thats all i have cleaned and to be honest there wasn't much dirt inside it. Or do i clean inside the throttle housing where the butterfly valve is. Cheers Tim.
