I reckon the single best mod you can do to an S3 is to remove the prop shaft

You mean from a breaking S3 and then fit it to your car?

Pulling the Haldex fuse out has the same effect prawny, and I have first hand experience, it noticeably quicker and goes round bends a bit smoother under power, but less traction as you would expect. :racer:

Good experiment Joe, I'm the first to admit, in the wet, my car is a complete waste of time.

In a more serious note though, I'd have to say in terms of spec, if retaining the stock 1.8l capacity, tuftys is about as good as it gets, it's a thing of beauty. There is little point going beyond that level on 1.8L capacity, as to get more power you're into the realms of lag, and driving enjoyment will suffer.

If retaining the 1.8T block and head but allowing free reign of bore / stroke, then Stacey or Andrews stroker coupled with a GTX30 seems like a good idea.

If you just want madness, then Bills 600bhp 1900cc 9000rpm gt35 hybrid FWD ibiza is clearly the maddest thing in the world :)

The build spec of an engine can be subjective to the power output you are after... there is no point spending 2k having a head ported and built up with full supertech valve gear etc if you are only fitting a hybrid K04...

What are you looking for in terms of ultimate spec? an ultimate spec engine for a road car is going to be different to one used for some kind of motorsport...

The big turbo thread in the stickies covers most of the basics... you spec the engine build to the intended power output and intended use...

To me I really don't think mine is a ultimate spec. If I knew what I know now back when I started my project I would of done things different

I would love to do a R36 turbo engine but that's breaking your rules to this game so I would have to say Edds Force Fed engineering golf with over 1000 bhp 2.0 20v engone in a S3

    yawn

    budget determins spec
spec is dependant on what power "delivery" you seek

this strikes me as the beginnings of a pointless thread... maybe thats just me

Badger5/tuffty built, rtech tuned, Prawn installed, it's the best a man can get

I've had a 2wd s3 for about a week. Was a looney tune! Fast, responsive but my god I couldn't use full throttle in 1st, 2nd and I'd still spin in 3rd in really mild damp. If it was wet I'd put it in 6th and go home. The Quattro powertrain is helpful and abit different to these fwd looney tunes. Although I still want to experience prawns car lol.

But everyone's ultimate build is different like bill said. For me, it would be a 2.0tfsi conversion with some sort of hybrid turbo to be different :)

I'm pretty sure this would have me in tears every time I felt like using the loud pedal. Road manners for a daily drive, probably not the best.

From what I can make out here:
AUDI S3 BY STRATIS AUTOSPORT 740AWHP
    It's a 2.0. 82.5mm with TFSI crank. <web geek>That page has the worst html markup ever</web geek>

Like has already been said, if I was going balls out, R32 or R36 turbo. There's one in Sydney rocking 650hp (so far) and it's a daily.

I mean who could turn down this kind of noise (and a mk1 for that matter):

i watched my brother dyno a 900bhp supra at PTS (in luton) with no problem, also on that golf they may have ran it on a hub dyno so that way no wheel spin issues or they could have ran it up on a engine dyno and calculated the transmisson losses to give them that figure?

you say no problem.. no wheel spin? on rollers? thru 2 wheels?
seriously? how? Was this a twin roller setup or single large roller with it perched up on top.

if there's wheelspin the numbers are BS, simple as.. You loose tractive effort and spin on the rollers, depending on make of rollers, the figures will be wrong.... and often higher than reality.

for starters bill it was a twin roller dyno, yes seriously through 2 wheels with no wheel spin after a couple of goes strapping it down. plus the rollers was in good condition and not worn out. they was calibrated every 6 months and we used to do back to back testing with superchips in buckingham. if you cant get traction on the rollers get some fat blokes to sit on it (that always helps).you can also see wheel spin on the graphs so you know its porkies. you would look like a bit off a cock posting up claimed big bhp if the graph had a spike in it and no self respecting tuner would give out the paper work to their customers as they would look like they didnt have a clue what they was doing! also as stateed above a hub and engine dyno combats wheel spin due to no wheels being on the car! ;) but as no one knows we are all pissing in the wind guessing!!!

i think andy waite's white mk 1 golf is pushing about 600 bhp now and his mate carl with the green mk2 golf ( ex dub sport demo car) is pushing 750bhp. both being uk cars too!

this dyno do coastdown losses ?
or was it a dyno dynamics (which calculates the fly figure from atw)

If it measures coastdowns, and phatblokes are sat on it no the acceleration run, they should also be sat on the coastdown run also, else conditions and drag will have changed

plenty of cocks about waving their dyno plots about.... be they BS or not.. lol

900bhp thru 2 wheels has got to be wheel spinning if there's any load on them... braked or inertia? do you know the make of the dyno...?

    You missed

    Larger valves
    Solid lifters
Lower the compression with that spec
Dich the charger as it over complicates things for my liking
Change the turbo for one with a billet wheel

i just think with the power that can be had from a 3076 or similar, coupled with the spool and instant power of a supercharger would make for one hell of a car!!!

not going stage 2 gops :superman:
