Driving along i notice the slight tubo whine was now a whistle,so i put my foot down in 3rd gear arond 35mph,car cut out just as turbo was kicking in,thinking back im sure there was a 'pop' noise just before it died(abit like poping a bag of crisps)

I first checked oil....it was ok,then i started it and drove it about 20 yards ...couldnt drive it as the smoke was very bad,i started it again and soon as i did smoke poured out......whiteish/grey ,i knocked the engine off re started it 2 -3 times after and still same, but this time the engine was running on even after i turned the ignition off, on/off....on/off with the ignition and it eventually stopped, the AA came and said do not start it or engine will get knackered,no coolant has been lost......seems like the turbo, thats why theres no oil left in the engine, before atempting to start it he said drain intercooler, put some oil in it then start it......there was also i hissing/whirring noise when i started it and AA said maybe turbo bearing has give in..........these the usual turbo symptoms?

and btw. don't switch it on anymore.

that overrun could well continue and it will run flat out until its dumped and burned all the oil in the engine. then basically it really is game over, for the lot of it!!

It will do this with the keys in your hand and not even in the ignition.

I thought the diesel turbo over run didn't happen nowadays? It used to make me cringe watching that happen

I would have good look round the turbo area make sure there's no oil escaped anywhere and check all your pipes/hoses that popping sound could have been a hose coming off under boost then post your findings on here. If you don't see nothing I would personally just go to a specialist lots of smoke is generally a bad thing, did the oil pressure light come on?

Always replace the oil feed pipe ! Part of the warranty on a reconditioned turbo is the mandatory replacement of the pipe (about £40 if I remember correctly )

Sorry mate - not actually done it myself, just passing on info. I had been given.

Not sure why you are buying new unless it's very cheap or a hybrid.! Mine went at 75k and a recon with two years warranty will surely do me nicely !!

Ive just got some 'DIRKO' sealant for the sump,as that will be taken off and cleaned as a precaution,,,,,,,,,,any ideas of what the torque settings are for the sump bolts and also the bolts that go onto the manifold that holds the turbo?

Have you checked the intercooler pipework yet? Had this on my 1.9 PD Golf Anni. Accelerated - loud pop - no power and loads of smok except on tickover. Turned out to be an intercooler pipe had cracked.

I think you will find that the £700 turbo from TPS will be an exchange price and not the full price for a new Turbo. Our TDis shouldn't overrun to destruction that is why the IMF is there to starve the Engine of air when your switch the ignition off. That is off course assuming that your IMF is working and not jammed.

turbo all done, above the battery is a black box with about6 pipes going to it........when i rev the car it makes a loud hissing noise which is noticeabl on idle too,ive unplugged the unit then the hissing noise dissappears, soon as i plug it in again the hissing starts, the turbo feels like there is lag just before it kicks in,is this something do with the unit? it was ok prior to the turbo dying, mechanic said maybe the cat has got blocked and its causing the unit to hiss, but im not sure cuz when i unplug it 1 pipe has suction on it,if it were hissing due to the cat being blocked it would be trying to breath rather than suck.........any ideas?

A picture of what your trying to descibe would be helpful...

Im guessing what your're trying to describe is no5 - the N75 valve? This is in effect a pressure relief valve for the turbo so it doesn't go pop at higher pressures than its rated for. If its hissing at idle check the pipes have been connected the correct way round & is even plugged in, if all connections are ok & it still hisses it will need replacing. Its only meant to release/recirculate pressure (at 2.2 bar?) back into the inlet intake & not below, which could explian the turbo lag if its not building up the pressure (due to the N75 leaking).

its no5 yes,its worse when i drive, the hissing is coming from the hose that go's to the brake vacuum,,if i disconnect the pipe and put my finger on it,theres good suction on the pipe, which means its working ok for the brakes but why shud i be hearing it is the issue, maybe sucking outside air too.

Did this problem get resolved? I have just replaced my turbo after the turbine shaft snapping, was driving ok for 20miles or so but felt abit under powered. Now the car seems to boost really we'll but there is a loud hissing noise under load that can also be heard very faintly at idle near the vacuum solenoid box. Any info would be greatly appreciated as am abit worried to drive my car like this not knowing what's happening.

both ends of the egr pipe have to come off when yo replace the turbo for easier access....the pipe im on about is silver shiny metal pipe which has 2 alen bolts at each end its the close one to number 8 on the pick, both ends have gaskets,i replaced mine which solved it...go audi ask for 2 egr pipe gaskets £1 each.

I had to replace my turbo due to a snapped shaft and I've also noticed there is more noise than I would have expected coming from the solenoid block. Its enough that you can hear air when someone else revs a bit on idle and you put your head close.

I'm sure its lagging low down in the rev range and then suddenly spools. Are the blocks known for going?

Changed the gaskets - no difference.

This is the boost graph from when the turbo failed:

Looks like the classic coked up VNT but the vanes moved freely when the turbo was taken off.

It still felt the same after the turbo was changed - laggy at low revs, lacking in power in 1st and 2nd, reluctance to rev. Turbo spooled up once the revs increased though.

Checked the vacuum line from the actuator to the solenoid block and all seemed fine. Changed the solenoid block this week and all is back to normal. Boosts as it should do, no more lag and sudden spool, much happier to rev and the odd noise has gone from the solenoid block.

I think the solenoid block was the cause of the over boost leading the the turbo failure in the first place.
