Hi all, I removed the Turbo so I could clean it, but as you can see by the picture the turbines are not looking too good. I'm not a trained mechanic, just very handy with the tools, so any advise on my options for this will be greatly received, I'm still going to clean it and put it back together for the time being, any guesses as to how long this Turbo will last in this state?

    Cheers.

That turbo looks absolutely shot. Huge gouges out of the turbo. I'm surprised it's holding any boost at all.

I'd get that replaced ASAP if that was me to prevent any more parts of the turbo entering the engine at high speed causing damage

Take the exhaust manifolds off and buy new ones, they are double skinned and the inside dividers are made of cheap steel which rusts and small bits break and damage the VNT mechanism and turbine. You will need a new turbo or a new turbine and rebuild, however it will cost more than a good 2nd hand turbo due to a new VNT is needed... Had the same issues chasing a power loss when i got the a6 from FJ Twelve, he reported intermitent power loss and had his Turbo Dynamics hybrid rebuilt twice before i found the issue AND rebuilt the turbo for the last time ! Here are some pictures of what i found inside the turbo:

    Thanks for the quick replies,
I'm running out of funds to replace with a new one, but I'm up for getting a new turbine and rebuild it, or replace with 2nd turbo, so where is the best place to source, either a new turbine to rebuild, or a 2nd hand one?
    Again many thanks.

Have a look on ebay for a cheap used one. Or there are some cartridges on the bay too. Never used one or know anyone that has...but cheap enough to get you going again?

But you really need to fix the initial cause of the failure before fitting a replacement blower.

Hi, I will take a look on ebay, but in case i cannot find one of the same, would you happen to know if any other Turbo that will fit straight on without any mods to it? also can you tell me more about cartridges, and what they are? <<< I've sussed it about the cartridges, so you can scrap that last question.
    cheers.

There are plenty of used blowers on the bay for Audi A4/A6 2.5 TDi. Cross reference with the part number on yours is best bet. There are some with the last letter that is different yours but will fit all the same.

Unless you sort the issue with the manifolds you could be wasting your time sorting the turbo. As Chris says the material that has caused the damage has come from the inside of the manifolds and 5 minutes after you fit the new turbo a large piece of material may dislodge itself and take the turbo out again.
Had a quick look on Etka The manifolds look to be around £180 each. Thats a ball park figure.
You could take a chance and just sort the turbo but I would expect the manifold issue to only get worse.

    cheers all for your help,
I'm going to finish cleaning the turbo, refit it for now, De-cat maybe? blank off the egr, have a look for corrosion around the ECU, as a few months back she died whilst going around a roundabout, (no brakes or steering :)) making a loud clicking sound coming from the area of the ecu, this was intermittent for a few days, but has not done it since, anyone else had this happen to them? I'm sure there will be more things lurking around the corner ready to jump out.

Hi again, I've been using my Audi with the cleaned, albeit, worn turbo, and it runs not to bad, but I have a problem with it going into limp mode, this only happens if i go over 70mph, the car will easy go over a ton, but as soon as I decelerate and go back to 70 then limp mode kicks in, if i pull over and wait a few mins then alls ok, anyone have any clue as to why this would do this? I have got a fault code of: 00575 KWP1281, intake manifold pressure sporadic regulating limits exceeded. I have checked all vacuum hoses and checked that there is no leaks. help very much appreciated.

    Replace the turbo.
Sporadic means the car doesn't have a clue whats going on - which I reckon could be the turbo. e.g- car requests boost, turbo cant provide linear boost in its condition so may under or over-boost in certain situations.

I can almost red line it from stand still through the gears and and it wont go into limp mode, it only does it when i go over the 70 mph mark, so I would of thought if it was the turbo then it would limp mode all the time? faulty n75, maf, or, map, maybe?

Your turbo in that condition is almost the equivalent of having a bent / stuck valve - they spin around 14,000rpm if I remember correctly - the turbine in that condition cannot be doing any good at all - im surprised it hasn't eaten itself by now due to balancing.

What im getting to here is - there is probably no point replacing other items until you have replaced the turbo, it needs doing anyway! - as it may well be the cause and may have become worse since you last took it apart.

I had a Vectra that would only go into limp in 6th going up-hill.

    You have a good point.
What caused your Vectra to go into limp?

Turbo's spin a lot faster than 14,000 RPM. Typically more like 140,000 RPM and higher. Here is a compressor map for a similar size turbo to yours
    Garrett+GT20+Turbocharger+GT2056+Compressor+Map+55+Trim+260+HP+Honeywell+450x600+www.Turbocharge.jpg

You can see the numbers going up the right hand side of the map these are lines of speed in RPM. Starts at 70,000 all the way to 190,000. Your turbo is a mess and will never run correctly, it must be so far out of balance and the big holes in the turbine will cause major issues with respect to flow. As Chris said earlier no point in putting a new turbo in unless you fix the exhaust manifolds. There will be pieces of them braking off and these could be jamming the VNT mechanism as well as further damaging the turbine.

I never bothered to find out - didn't really have much love for that car!
The CDTi 150 was a good engine - was just a shame that all the gubbins attached to it (intake manifold, swirl flaps.etc) were all junk and common failures.

That's a lot of rpm, I now drive it like a nun and change gear before 2000rpm and keep it at just under 70mph, when on dual carriageways and its fine, another benefit is driving like that the fuel consumption is really good, thanks for the info.

I don't like this Audi ether, its so uncomfortable it kills my back getting in and out of it. yes the CDTI 150 are good, they seem to put a lot of things that don't need to be on them, talking of CDTI's anyone know why Audi sticks with TDI? I'm just curious.

Because at the time CR engine were very expensive and Audi was clever and let Mercedes/BMW and PSA to pay royalties (read R&D) to Bosch whilst VAG could keep selling older tech PD engines with similar if not better power and similar fuel economy ! When Bosch made the CR injection systems affordable, VAG group just got the better, latest design and stuck it in their cars from 2007 onwards !

As for tdi, all are direct injected engines since almost 1990...VE, PD and CR are just the way fuel is pressurized by a rotary pump, unit injector and HP pump/CR respectively !

Hi Maddy, if you don't need the old turbo, can i have it ? I will pay for the postage if it's necessary. Need a few bits of the old one in order to build a hybrid, only need the hotside - i believe the VNT ring on yours is scrap, if it's of no use to use i could use the compressor cover and maybe the cast piece as a donor for another turbo i am refurbishing... Let me know either way please... Regards,
    Chris
