Transponder Key Query

Hi
I need a replacement key for my Audi A3 8P model but I am confused, I have 1 key but I have read different views about buying a second hand key.
Some say you need a brand new key from dealer others say its possible to re program a used key.
Please can someone give me a def answer to this as I dont want to waste money on second hand key if its no good.

Hi, I bought a key from ebay and got it to work with the remote but i need somebody to get my skc code for me to write a new immobilizer chip to the car.
