    Hi everybody..

Well after going for a supercar "experience" today, ive decided to start a new project for a track car, we we're going to cage the CRX/Integra Turbo and turn that into a track car, but to be honest its too nose heavy and Fwd.
260bhp in something 900kgs is rediculous, not to mention when your on Vtec and on Boost it really is just too much for the bends, it flys through the gears in a straight line with the current transmission and is abit of a dog to drive...soooo....

Im looking at getting something that will be under 5g to start with, at standard good transmission, decent solid DOHC engine and doesnt weigh too much body wise. Dont forget that everything will probably be uprated, just a good base car...
I personally prefere long ratio gear boxes, so you can play with the long power ranges but again, if you have any other suggestions im still interested in your ideas..

What are your thoughts and suggestions? Ideally looking into the Jap scene but other car types are welcome as im keeping an open mind.

    Thank you in advance.

    Cheap, RWD, tunable....200SX.
Can be had for peanuts...spend some cash on a LSD back end, decent brake pads, tyres and suspension and make sure the engine is sound...and you'll have more fun per £ than pretty much any other car out there for the same cash.

Forget 4wd for track fun at that price...too much to break/maintain..RWD is more fun and won't cost as muc to run as an early Evo/STI.

Plus....you can always fit some **** rear tyres and give Drifting a go...just for the craic. Good times.

RWD Mini with a 2.2 VTEC
    Prob too much work though.

I would pick up an old rolling shell of a rwd car something from early 80's and stick a Hyabusa Turbo engine in it, there used to be nice adaptor kits on the net quite cheap but dunno about availability any more.

Try http://www.carandclassic.com/ some cracking buys on there ;)

Thanks to all for the ideas, plenty of food for thought, more always welcome.

JoJo - mate had a mr2 turbo with 400bhp, just too unbalanced, the front end is really light and isnt that great at handling unless you spend serious bucks, ideally front engine rwd/4wd.

Z82 - this would be insane, alot of work but so worth it, this would be nuts, a mate of mine is dropping the H22 out of the prelude into the Mk1 civic. Should be nutty when its done especially as he's uprating all the internals, cams etc. One saw a caterham with a hybusa engine in it, was frekin rediculous.

205 - Possibly, light quick cars but what engines are in those? 1.6 + 1.9.. 16v? DOHC or SOHC?

oranoco - Not a real fan of fords tbh, a mate of mine has a 250whp rs turbo escort and its so unreliable, always have problems with it.

Karl - nice cars, but sooo slow, engine isnt really that tuneable and the transmission is always near enough shot in those models.

Steve - Could do but want a normal car that we could possibly use for road use all year round, and something that isnt that unbareable to drive.

Glen - Awesome idea, something like this would be perfect. Im going to look into these see how much we can set it all up for. Might just set it up drift spec lol. Love these cars.

Ian - Also an awesome idea, ill look into the pulsars, always liked how quick they pick up speed but never really liked the looks.

both 1.6 & 1.9 are sohc, but dont let that put you off, its a bloody good engine

or you could look for one that has had an mi16 conversion with either 1.9 / 2.0 16v dropped in, and you could certainly pick one up for fairly cheap

or if you really shopped around you may find a very rare t16, but these are like hens teeth and as such would cost a small fortune if you ever found one

    What about a audi s4 , i've seen a couple around the 5k mark .265 bhp , quattro , 5.5-60mph & 155.
These can be modded to 400 bhp for 3-4k...

If your gonna uprate everything, why not get an MX5, might not be that quick as standard, but a bit of fettling and you would have a corking RWD motor with great handling

tons of them about as well

BMW E36 M3 EVO, 321BHP straight 6, or half a McLaren F1 engine for those who don't know, I'm sure you can find one for £5k.

Its gotta be a Pulsar cheap as chips easy to uprate just need an uprated gearbox.

Fiesta Zetec-S's are coming in quite cheap now.

Really good handling cars, very tunable engine, loads of parts available.

i still struggle to see past a gti-r for fun per £. £3000 will get you a car that will do 60 in 4 dead and about 160 mph if you have a long enough road.how many cars will give you that for twice that money?.far cheaper to maintain than an s4 or anything like that.just get decent brakes and suspension.standard engine will take 400bhp with the right turbo etc.

    Fair do's

They don't have to be unreliable though. Mines been better reliability wise in 13 years than my last A4 was in 2 years and that wasn't terrible

For a track car..you have to decide what you want.

Anything 4wd that's been mentioned will be dull as dishwater on the track. Fast does not mean fun on the track....the S4 is awoeful handling barge and a Pulsar has too much grip will eat gearboxes if treated roughly, and neither will provide half the fun of an old XR2, if the truth be told.

If you want something to go very fast in..you aren't even close...playing the fast game against 911 RSs, Redicals etc is going to get you nowhere but frustrated.

What you want, in my mind, is the maximum fun you can for your money.
Not maximum speed...there is a big difference.

    Don't discount FWD either...
I've had a nova and XR2 track car - the XR2 specifically was cheap, handled well for minimal fuss and with a decent cam and some twin 40s was a quick car - only weighed 800 odd Kgs!
The Fiesta is a good car to start with..as is a 205 GTI.
A Fiesta Zetec, with ITBs, decent springs and dampers, bucket seats, a cage and stripped out will give many fast cars a hiding on a track...you see it week in, week out.
Same with a 205 if you add a GTI6 engine (not as soft as the MI16).

You can pick up track prepped FWD cars for a few £k..all the hard work done..just spend the rest on trackdays, tyres and brakes.
    Job done.

If I were starting from scratch now, I'd probably get a Fiesta, add a 1.8/2.0 Zetec/Duratec, ITBs, cams and an Emerald ECU..and you'll see 200+ BHP, which on a stripped ut, lightweight Fiesta chassis (a fine handling car) will see you having serious fun on the track - and minimal weight means minimal tyre wear and brake wear too!

I think your gonna have the most fun in a small fwd hatch.

I hate french cars but for a track car I'd look no further than peugeot.

    106 GTI, 205 GTI, 306 GTI, 206 GTI....

Perhaps even an ax, saxo or clio 16v but uber budget fun.

Agree with Ess Three, there's more fun to be had with a car that handles well as opposed to one that just goes very fast in a straight line!! Corner speed is where a fast lap time generally lies, look at the current MotoGp bikes which are now 800cc compared to 990cc, they corner faster being lighter so are taking 1-2 seconds out of the lap records set on the 990cc bikes. The stars in reasonably fast cars only get good times on the top gear track when they corner well. and my final piece of evidence, I know of a bloke who took his chipped Smart Roadster (approx 110bhp) to the "ring" and was seen to be p'ing all over porkers and other things in the bends, although he then lost out big time on the straights!!

I'd go with max fun as 1st priority rather than max power to weight ratio, you'll learn to handle the car on track a lot safer & a lot quicker than with something with a lot of power.

The trouble with an ITR is that £5k isn't going to get you a great example..and it's not going to leave much left over to prep it - and you can mprove them (Better dampers, Mugen ARBs, grooved discs, better pads, strip them out, swap the front upper wishbones over and have a full algnment done).

    A great car...but track prepped you'll only get a dog for £5k.

Plus bits are EXPENSIVE for them.
