Tips for powersteering hose change

I've got to change the feed hose from the pump to the rack on my mates '96 B5 TDi tomorrow, the pump end looks simple enough but what is the best way to get at the connection on the rack? I'm assuming through the wheel arch? does the plastic liner at the back come out without too much effort? does it then give you enough room to get at the union?
