Time for a build thread....big turbo

The battery is in the engine bay, but if I'm correct I think Alex uses the battery tray in the boot for his WMI pump? I'm sure he will be along to confirm this though.

I didn't realise you'd gone from 3" to 3.5" I thought the milltek was a 2.5" and the BCS was 3"

Looking at the picture, you can also run two smaller pipes both sides of the diff but I doubt there will be a hanger for the exhaust round the other side of the diff!

Is the battery in the boot on the S3 as you'd gain quite a lot of room in the engine bay if it is - I'm running out of room under the bonnet!

Thanks
Alex

Yes...the WMI pump is in the rear battery well.

The exhaust is a custom build by BCS.....90mm throughout, with the dump tube from the turbo blended into the 90mm exhaust tubing, and preserving much of the original Nortech downpipe.

Quick update....

Just had a very good chat with Andy at Storm, who took a lot of time to explain where things are with my car,and what the best things to do now would be.
It's a real pleasure to be able to talk to someone who is obviously busy, but doesn't let that stand in the way of giving a customer more than a quick few words.

We talked about the turbo, and the head, and how the grooves used to hold the now discarded intake flaps can cause turbulence and limit flow, and that, coupled with the relatively large hot side on my turbo can contribute not only to slow and late spool, but also be limiting the midrange on my car.

The car does produce the power and torque, but another similar car, running those mods above, has a broader spread of torque, and isn't losing out at the top end.

So....he's pricing up the head work from Race Developments, and looking into downsizing the turbine, going to ceramic bearings, and creating a 3576 out of all that.

They've already got a good selection of the parts for the gearbox fitting, and have some of the others on order.....as he said,a complex build, but should result in a very fast car.

Good to hear they have been making good progress with your car - I have noticed there always seems to be something that comes up where you could improve it haha!

Does this progress also mean you'll have a parts list for the gearbox :D I've been looking at the different driveshafts used more recently to try and restrain the temptation of just buying a gearbox!

Andy has the parts list.

Already got the box, transfer case, mounts and driveshafts.
Now the steering wheel, shift mechanism and then the G/b oil cooler and a few other parts before is goes in and gets interfaced to the Syvecs.

Assuming all that goes well,in the meantime, then the head inlet port work would help with spool and flow,by reducing turbulence.
Andy has said that on a car similar to mine they were getting much quicker spool and a better torque spread.
Reducing the turbine size would also improve that.....we discussed the benefits of the newer ceramic bearings, and also that whilst Owens are conservative with respect to turbo sizing(i.e. larger rather than smaller),the use of the Syvecs means getting more from less in a sense.

Light at the end of the tunnel....

The car is being stripped down, and the head and turbo are being sent off for their mods, while Storm get started on the gearbox install.

Andy's estimated about 2 months before it's ready,so that should be in time for the New Year...lol

Best of luck.

That does cross my mind at times....

R8 V10 money in all.

It doesn't really have the presence of one but then it does have more grunt ...

Hmmm

So much for the new R8 V10 adverts popping up everywhere, I think someone is going to go R8 hunting!

The beast has already claimed a few along the way....Andy reckons this round of mods will make it difficult to beat.

When you're done? I guess once the jet engine starts to poke out the back, it would give things away a bit

Just had a good chat with Andy.

Turbo's having an HTA82 wheel fitted and already had the updated bearings as part of the original M-spec.
Also getting the hot side housing ceramic coated and binning the turbo jacket for more space.

Head is off and the inlets look clean.

Intercooler half full of water so my WMI system was running way too much.

Head and manifolds off to Race Developments shortly and will get the inlets smoothed out to remove the notches that the runner flaps had sat in and to have the inlets and outlets port matched as well.

Parts cost a fortune from Audi....DSG shifter is around £500 and the gaiter and knob are extra as if you'd need those.
£300 each for the driveshafts.

Can't wait to see the end result! Should be something special.

I sometimes miss the manual for pure driving experience, but for out and out performance even on the road it's very hard to beat a DSG. One of the reasons I love taking my wife's Mini Cooper S out for a hoon :) After the updated DSG map went in on my box last weekend it has been even more impressive. Not really in the same league as the plan is here, but still...

I was quite happy with the driveshafts being new.

The box itself was a very good offer from a friend.

I'm sure it will be fun.....the turbo and head mods should aid spool, and Andy says the HTA82 wheel is a great improvement over the standard part.
The turbo should still clear enough air for 700bhp at maximum, where the thing as it stands can get to around 750bhp,so I'm trading a bit of absolute top end for better torque and power across the usable range.

Also suggested superfinishing the cams, and will see if Race Developments recommend anything else.

Already got the flywheel, transfer case and gearbox oil cooler,so things should start to come together soon.

Yeah, that will be a beast of a car! Are you going for the most powerful 8P in the country/world award with this one? :)

Also, please be careful and not rip a hole in the space-time continuum when it's finished - with great power comes great responsibility and all that! :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Not sure.....Andy reckons it will be one of the fastest in the UK,but maybe not the most powerful...I don't know.

There's quite a few now trotting around with this sort of power(500+bhp),but very few with the Syvecs ECU,which really does make a difference,in programming, and the way it runs the engine and the DSG together.

I have absolutely no idea of responsibility etc.

Not advertising here, but i think that this is the fastest/most powerfull tfsi in the world (848hp). Coming from a greek tuner (0-400 tune to race). The car was driven to and from the race and ran 8.9.

I've seen this and the Exelixis cars.
It's a great effort and I also want a daily reliable driver so I'll go with what Storm get for me.

The ECU does make a huge impact on the delivery so that helps too.
I wouldn't suggest going 850hp for a daily either! That would just be silly! But since you were discussing highest horsepower, i thought i might just post it. I do admire your build.

Trust me ...I wish LOL
The quote from Walter Rohrl always makes me smile. ..

A car is just fast enough when you stand in front of it in the morning and are afraid to unlock it.

My GpN Escort was scary enough to concentrate my mind every day and I hope this does the same.

Hey...good to see you...hope you're well.

It's been a long slow process, mostly through getting all the parts together and getting to a point where it was worth stripping the car down.
I've got to say that while I was really impatient to get going,Storm have done the right thing and organised everything properly.

Now it really is in bits I can see where they're going with it.
