Thinking about getting rid of the A3 1.8S and getting a Civic Type R. I was all over one round corners the other day untill we both got to a set of lights where he left me. It sounded sooooo good! What do you think guys?

Good cars I reckon - great performance (if you enjoy revving) and very reliable and are newer than the S3's for the same cost so you dont get the normal problems older cars can bring...

Great cars, great fun, insurance can be expensive but its different for everyone, I was put off them for the main reason of its image around here. Lots and lots of mods available too

I personally dont like anything to do with Honda after an experience i had with Honda at Crewe.

Father in law 70 years old books his 04 civic at this dealer for a 20k service at 28 months old (without me knowing unfortunately) returns home in his courtesy car which he had to put petrol in cos the light was on.
He then recieves a call saying his brakes require attention so he gives them the go ahead (unfortunately).

Picks his car up the following day and gets hit with a £680 bill.
Pensioner ripoff comes to mind as soon as i hear.

I contact them and ask to see the service manager, the techy who worked on the car and the parts that were replaced.

The techy's on hols, the parts have been scrapped and the waste of good oxygen service manager aint gotta clue.
He suggests corrosion i ask to veiw, he then suggests heavy braking and i fall to the floor laughing.
To cut a long story short i wrote to Honda and they backed the dealer and the dealer came back with nothing.

I contemplated going further but decided we would just cut our losses.

It didnt go back there for its soon due 1st MOT and wont ever go back again.
I am a qualified engineer and have been for 30 years in the automotive industry and to have some dealer service manager telling me that heavy braking and a 70 year old careful driver did the damage was a joke.

If Honda ever buy VW i will go back to Vauxhall.

BEWARE OF THE HONDA DEALER IN CREWE AND THE DEAD HEAD SERVICE MANAGER WHOM I COULD NOT GET TO MEET FOR 2 WEEKS.

I stood in the showroom on my 1st visit and didnt want to fall out with the girl on reception and nobody came to see me from the service dept.

I have had 5 Honda Civics, cheap to run, lots and lots of fun with the DOHC VTECS. So many mods its like lego for grown ups. Servicing its cheap and off cam they are great on fuel.

I would have another but the natural progression was to get a type-r and they just have a bad chavvy image now, I also looked at Integras and Preludes but the insurance was crazy money

The comments about Crewe Honda I am sure I have heard similar before RE bad customer service, however this could happen at any main dealer, they are a franchise, I always find a specialist but I admit thats not always the way to go with newer cars under warranty

By the way im on about a 2005 CTR. I no they have a chav image but i dont mind, i dont like the new CTRs think they are too much about the future and new flash gadgets unlike the good old hondas which are meant to be 4 seats steering wheel gearshift and a engine which gos nuts after 5400 nothing more!

Sorry for bumping this thread, But has anyone got any idea what i would be paying for insurance on a Standard 2001 CTR. PH 2years NCB and Pass Plus did an online quote with elephant (current insurer) and they said phone them but i dont think they are open today.

Tell me who won out of the CTR and the WRX? It seemed that the WRX didnt really have a good take off?

Just curious as Ive owned 2 scoobs & 2 CTR's.

For the money a CTR is a great car. I think they are far better than audi in the twisties and when on song its a very fast car. They are reliable but do have a few small probs but you can live em. The steering can be a bit **** & creaky, there was a few fixes under warranty.. Also the fifth gear synchro was a common prob. It would cause the second gear to crunch at high revs. Dont ask me how or why but there are many owners on the civic type r website that can vouch for that.

I still loved mine but at the rate I go through cars I got bored (twice!)

If your money can stretch I would opt for the facelift..

I was paying £700 with 10 years no claims, quite steep really! I do live in manchester tho, so it maybe (will be) cheaper in other parts of the country.

haha the WRX did some mad manouvers and went around him then turbod off into the distance! haha jus thought id cut it early making the type r look good.

Ive heard alot about this but seriously if i had these problems on the A3 i would throw the car away. But seeing as they are alot cheaper to do on the Civic i would always reach for the wallet and come out smiling. About the handling - three words I LOVE IT, lower the revs below v-tec point it into the direction you want to go then stamp on the loud pedal and v-tec out of the corner, brilliant recipe!

ive seen your record 35 cars or something?

I think i might wait for a while and get the facelift, xenons as standard and the sharper steering if im correct.

Thats a bummer, ill have to get a proper quote early tomorow.

Ive had quite a few honda's last one being a Civic type R, they are great cars out of the box they keep up with quite alot in 1st, 2nd and 3rd IF its dry then in the wet they are hopeless at putting the power down and unless you have the JDM import with LSD you will find your self quickly moving towards curbs on roundabouts. The reason I bought the S3 because

    A) To start modding the Civic your looking at big bucks, to get the car running around 240-250 bhp which involves, Manifold, exhaust, cai and KPRO remap your looking at around £2000 I can get 260 on the S3 for £350 :)

    B) The Driving position of the Type R is not a relaxed drive with the way the gearstick is positioned

    C) The interior and dash is very basic and rattles

    D) They drink oil like no tomorrow. I was putting in a liter every 600 miles.

    E) The CTR drank more petrol than any car I've had, 10 quid a day! That £10 lasts me 2 days in the S3 :)

oh and the only mechanical difference between pre-facelift and facelift is a lighter flywheel which is supposed to shave off 0.3 of your 0-60 or something silly like that. I prefer the pre facelift as it doen't have the gastly lexus lights!

    Thanks for the comments but....
Thats all fair but im not comparing it to an S3, and im not modding either i just dont have that type of money (still a student), and seeing as we are on this topic the S3 dont need much for engine tuning where as the civic does (only 200BHP) but the suspension and handling tuning the S3 need alot of work on whereas the civic doesnt.

I found it being better the seats hold me in on the sides and the gear lever isnt to far from the steering wheel which i like.

Thats true but my a3's interior was not all that to be honest.

It revs up to 8200RPM thats inevitable, but this means it will do more that 60 in second.

Remember these types of engines were not intended to be raced and sport was not on hondas mind when they discovered it. They were originally made for economy and if you keep it out of vtec zone (5600, which is where im changing gear at the moment in the audi) the fuel economy would be better than a £10 a day.

lol sorry have to disagree with you here too lol i like the facelift body its more sporty but subtle at the same time!:meeting:

Im not dissing them, dont get me wrong and your needs might be different to mine. They are very good cars, reliable, fairly quick and good fun. Not too mention cheap now the new type R is out!

Dave you must have been hammering the ctr if you got less mpg than the S3! The great thing I thought about the ctr was that the mpg were very reasonable depending how you drove it obviously ;)

My S3 seems to drink more petrol than both my ctr's ever did.

The ctr in the wet was pants but in the dry I thought it was great. The only thing with the ctr & all the other vtec engines was that you had to be screaming its tits off to get the best out of it. Where as the S3 the power is more accessible.

Again on track imo both cars as standard (in dry conditions) the ctr would beat the S3.

I agree Dave that the S3 is more readily tuneable & at a much lower cost. I personally prefer the S3 as an everyday car and its far easier to live with.

I also loved where the gearbox/knob was positioned but again thats just my opinion.

I have to second Ibzzzz on that the facelift looks better. The headlights, front bumper, wing mirrors, interior are far better than the pre facelift. When they are parked side by side there is no comparison and thats coming from someone that owned 2 prefacelift models.

At the end of the day its down to personal preference. The best bet is to see and test drive both models. Eitherway both ctrs and the S3 are great cars!

Good luck mate in your hunt!

The facelift has a lighter flywheel, some suspension difference, cant remember what, something to do with the steering was recitified as above, different front and rear lights and indicators in the side mirrors. There are money differences, quite a few in fact, they are all listed on CTRO in a sticky I think.

The only gripe with VTEC for me was the only time you could use it was on motorway slip roads, dual carriagways with national limit, etc, by the time you are at the top of VTEC in 3rd you are approaching licence losing speeds. But yes, coming out of a corner in second with the needle on 5.5K and all you have to do is plant it, it was lots of fun. Much more accesable power with a turbo though, not to mention the torque, I doubt I will go back to Honda

don't start me on Honda Customer service, I ended up getting banned from a chain of 5 dealers, which left me with none within 40 miles

not only were each of the dealerships useless, Honda UK customer services were probably worse, it annoys me to even think about it...

its a shame because the Integra Type R I had was very good

Had some fun in a mates type r last night! :D:D:D obviously its alot quicker than the A3, and so much more rev happy! It was a facelift in black but the he had changed the headlights to angel eyes for some silly reason. There is a neat trick gettin the most out of the vtec at the lights, take it to about 5000rpm dump the clutch let the wheels catch up to the revs and then switch to second and stretch through the revs. The handling is seriously untouchable! its funny because he drove my car too and likes "that 20valves torque". I can see myself having alot of fun in that car sometime in the summer, so im definatly getting one.
By the way sorry to anyone that got cut up, overtaken or bummed due to me feeling like im 17 again. :p

Bit of an Un-fair comparrison really the A3 1.8 N/A isnt any-where near a match for the CTR.

When i first got my 1.8T Mapped i had a play with a CTR the 1.8T was alot faster and with my suspension and ARB upgrades i was pulling car-lengths through the twisties.

If you want a complete package out of the box CTR is the way to go!

Because people on here seem to think their the best sports cars ever, and their not, their family hatchbakcs (A/S3's)

Plus asking a question of getting a Honda on an Audi board, your gonna get a one sided view
