If only it was as easy as that.

Of course what you say applies to a lot of threads. But there are also a lot of threads that it doesn't apply too. And searching as you suggest will mean missing these ones.

    OK Aythreee

Your looking for a "bumper".....but the guy posted it under "S3 spoiler/spliter" not Bumper....You cant win...

there are usually a dozen threads started a day...it takes less than 30 seconds to scan the titles and lets face it 95% of threads are not A3 or S3 specific anyway.

I wonder how many people don't read threads because they are marked S3 and they have a A3...or vise versa ? I read the title and if its obvious and i am interested, i look at the thread, if it not obvious i look anyway as my interest is in The A3 whether its a 1.4D or and S3 or a 3.2 or a super tuned special...

Ok, so someone starts a thread "S3 Spoiler/splitter" when really meaning bumper, but uses the prefix 'exterior'................

I think it's a fair assumption that somewhere within this thread there's a good chance "bumper" would be mentioned.... therefore it's possible, if there was an 'exterior' category to add to your search, that it would give this thread as a result, whilst avoiding all other threads related to say re-maps where someone has mentioned a bumper just because it's next on their list of mods.

Don't get me wrong, I do see where you are coming from. I just don't think you see the possible benefits of the opposite.

That took you 13 minutes from my last post to fiind that on youtube.
Just imagine how quick you would've found it if they had prefixes!! ;)

Believe it or not, I didn't spend all that time looking on YouTube. I'd made and eaten a highly nutritious meal before starting to look:

The search function on this forum is clearly far too **** for its own good. We need more distinction around here fgs!!!!

Staz, did someone say "Hey, I like your A3" or somthing? ;)

I like reading all posts from everyone with an S/A3.

Cant we all be one big happy family like it used to be?

Everyone has valuable information to share.

Personally I think you'd be a fool not to click a thread, just because it isn't S3 specific for example..

As an S3 owner I'd like the 8P threads to be transparent, I dont want to be subliminaly encouraged to ignore posts that arnt specific to my model. Ive found MarQ's posts very helpful, Boydies in the past also. Where would I have been if this pigeon holing was around then? I may well have ignored such treasures. :Flush:

I now find myself agreeing with you WizBit. I think the forum was better without any form of prefix at all. Most posts are to do with the 8P models in general even if that particular person drives an S3. If someone wants an answer to a query that is on something that is related just to the S3 all they have to do is put S3 in the title. The same applies to TDI, S-tronic or anything else.

Why are you all getting hung up on the S3/A3 thing still?! I thought we progressed away from that and now we're just looking at whether and what improvements the pre-fixes could add to the forum rather than just getting rid of them altogether.

Please re-read my post about keeping it all together, all the same, all on a level. Also please note the apparent unnanamous agreement with such an idea (yes, ppl agree with the Wizard) :D

We are all of the same platform, no need to make a simple thing complicated, we all know where the search function is. :keule:

All you seem to be missing right now Staz is a dark room, spotlight and a slow drip from the tap onto our foreheads..

I don't think we are, are we Staz? I thought we'd just established that the primary function of a thread title was to describe it's purpose and therefore, content, negating the need for any form of prefix.

Re-read it yes and it refers to the S3 a few times including the statements:

    and
    We've moved on from this!

How about keeping this type of bulls**t out of your posts in future and I may start taking you seriously.

Well I didn't mean at this exact point in the thread I just meant since the resurrection of the thread when FactionOne made his posts.

I never thought I would be the one defending staz on this one, but I think it only fair to point out that he has conceded that the whole 8P General\S3 Specific prefix thing is not going to work. You guys should lay off him. The fact that all you S3 owners were able to find this thread and vote in the poll shows that you are not just ignoring the threads that are not S3 specific. If you look closely you will see that this thread is marked as "A3 Specific". Actually, I'm surprised staz was able to find it too!

As most of you have clearly missed out when the bling bling logos appeared the prefixes have changed from being 8P General and now distinguish between the A3 and the S3. So there can be no confusion in future over what a thread refers to.

Although, the removal of the 8P bit will cause some confusion when rolled out to the rest of the forum as somebody who wants to query something about their 8P A3 will select the "A3" prefix from the drop down list and also get a list of results from the 8L section too.

I think the simplest way to resolve the issue is to create an S3 sub forum and if somebody thinks that their thread might be of interest to somebody in the standard A3 section they can pop a post into the A3 section to tell the A3 owners that there is a thread in the S3 section that might interest them.

this business of adding additional prefixes for ICE, exterior, wheels, engine, etc also makes a mockery of the whole thing. are there not specific sub forums for ICE, bodywork, wheels, engines, etc.? You might as well merge all the forums into one and just use the prefixes to differentiate between the topics.

As I've said before I spend a lot of time reading up on various automotive forums due to being out of work and spending all day at home looking after my sick mother. I have never seen this issue on other forums where there is a halo model in a particular segment - civic, golf, corsa, focus, etc. they seem to be able to manage with just the default search package.

Actually Dave I find myself agreeing with you & wizbit, it is now getting bit silly & I would prefer back to as it was

lmfao, but also what he said.

You lie down, mate I went into a coma after reading the possibility of Dave having a remap & now agreeing with wizbit, now where's those 72 virgins they say are in heaven, lol

All we're doing tbh is going round in circles & nothings really changing so for me please just get rid of the prefixes & this poxy thread, its becoming ridiculously annoying now.

to be fair, the option the majority voted for was:

I don't see any mention there of "I think they are a great idea, but in their current incarnation they are a bit pants, but if you want to change things a bit and have a look at improving them then I'm all for it. Crack on!".

I think we should get this thread back on track - what was it about - Ah yes - Prefixes. Are they a good idea or not?

No you're right that option wasn't there but since the thread bump there has been a few positive comments toward adjusting the set-up. There have been some constructive points raised for and against too and I'm all for that.

There have been a few positive comments about how the system is as it stands and then posts like this:

that gave me the impression that it might be worthwhile extending the selections to benefit more users.

It seems obvious now that the A3/S3 prefix idea is dead in the water.... It seems now people are looking for another change instead......its not that we even needed one in the first place. While we play around with trying to find something to change, the other threads A2 A4 S4 etc etc are running quite smoothly.
why dont we wait and see if one day someone has an idea about something that gets the vote rather than running round like headless chickens trying to change something that works very well as it is. People voted against prefixed for this reason

They're pointless/The red and blue looks cluttered/It can get quite tiring ignoring things

    Not just A3/S3 ......but prefixes

    Yep!

Yep, one that could benefit more people.

No one said that we NEED anything.

I don't think 8P is exactly falling apart at the seams.

No one has done anything yet as this thread is still pretty live.

Not necessarily. Have a read back of some of the comments.

Probably. Next time instead of scoring smarty-pants points, hit the report post button and I'll most likely give myself a stern bollocking.

I guess that'd be a pretty good option in terms of getting to a compromise quickly; but unfortunately it's not possible to make their visibility in the index user-selectable - well, it could be done with some time spent on the code, but (a) it'd be pretty labour intensive to achieve, bordering on prohibitively so and (b) there are other things in the pipeline for the pretty near future which mean any more tinkering with code is on hold for now.

I was hoping that with a set of clean, identically sized, aesthetically similar icons, the prominence of the prefixes in the layout could be reduced to the point of 'blending-in' and being present enough for those who wished to use them, while not being a considerable eye sore for those who didn't.

It was 8P General for all but the last couple of days' worth of argument when I began to try some new ideas, and switched to A3 and S3, and made the prefixes optional. Oh, as well you know...

    See.

    .

Cutting to the chase, that's not on the cards, and won't be for the forseeable future. Some background to that... Audi-Sport.net came from being a model specific forum (Sport 3.net) many moons ago, it grew exponentially and moved on, catering for more models. It's almost like evolution I guess, as development seems to happen that way regularly among automotive forums.

I guess I'm taking coals to Newcastle on that evolution bit then.

Well, as it was more an opinion poll than a strict ballot or referendum, there are no 'set-in-stone' outcomes to follow the result. If the result had been unanamous, then I guess it might've been more compelling to just let them bite the dust. It wasn't though, and even though there's been honestly ridiculous levels of argument on the issue (lets face it, we're talking about a potentially (once it's perfected) minor layout change to the index of threads), there has been some relatively constructive exchange of ideas. That's the bit which made it worth examining revisions of the system to perhaps mean that those who voted in favour of prefixes weren't left completely in the cold as it was instantly removed as a result of the poll.

Right, so here's what's going to happen now.

Prefixes will be disabled for the time being, it's likely we will run another trial in the not to distant future implementing a balance of what's been put forward by the group on this thread.

    Watch this space...

    Regards,

    Rob.
