Firstly, i'm a newbie so hi and cheers for having a look. Finally got round to signing up the other day and i dont know whether to consider it good timing or whether i've jinxed myself by signing up but the day after my steering started whining it's tits off.

I've been having a look around the forum and ive seen a few threads most of them talking about checking the fluid level, which i have and its ok. i also read one mentioning the power steering pump belt tension so i've figured this is where i'm going to start.

i dont suppose anyone have any tips or advise on firstly where to find the tension belt as it's not too obvious from the top (not that i've really had a chance to have a proper look just yet) and also how i'd go about replacing it if it is the problem.

    Cheers in advance!

I think you would be better jacking the car up and it is the bottom pulley closest to the front of the car on the left hand side (looking from the front of the car) it maybe leaking out of the metal pipes that run under the car... you can also check the fluid, it is next to the coolant top up bottle im guessing you have an s3 by your name, if so it will be under the cover with a driving symbol on it and a weird opening, i use a 50p piece... oh and welcome to the forum mate....:)

I'm going to hopefully get it in the air in the next couple of days, cheers for a starting point!
Yeah i checked my power steering fluid level earlier, hoping that it would just be low so i could just top it up and be away but unfortunately it was bang on the max meaning it's going to be a bit more of an effort!

Whats the best way to check if it's the pump or the belt etc?

If the belt feels tight its unfortunately the pump, and to be honest if it is whining its gonna be the pump...

Whining is usual cavitation, which can be caused by air in the system.

Open the reservoir with the engine running, and see if the fluid looks frothy.

Ok cheers for the heads up. if it is, do i just work the steering with the cap off to bleed the air out?
