I’m experiencing some issues with my cars temperature when driving it doesn’t hit 90 and I’m now thinking that my thermostat is stuck open not allowing my car to hit 90 I left my car running to see if the car would hit 90 stationary and it does and sits at 90 and when driving it falls down towards the 70 mark I have opened the expansion tank to release any trapped air and nothing changed also the oil temperature seems to be low I’m thinking that the car is needing the thermostat replaced to cure the problem any help will be appreciated thanks and the cars a 2000 s4 b5

When its below 90 can you feel any heat in the rad or the in and out pipes to it ?If so the stat is stuck open or opening too soon

Unlucky. You'll most likely have to fork out for a full (and proper) cambelt service now including the thermostat. Why people don't do these as standard is beyond me. You hear so many people having this problem.

IIRC, there was one guy on here who managed to replace the stat without replacing his cambelt, but I think you are taking a risk by fannying around with taking the tension off the belt just in case a shaft does move even one tooth.

What will happen if you don't renew the thermostat? Do you get overheating issues? Genuine question, I'm just curious.

I think in my cars case is that the thermostat is stuck open allow the coolant to cool the engine down before it hits around 96 degrees to stop the engine over heating meaning the engine will not run at the optimum running temperature so I don't think the car will over heat just run at a lower temperature

And possibly overfuel because the ECU thinks the engine is constantly in a heating cycle.

Mine gets up to 90C-93C ok [from aircom panel old 49 trick] and at 70mph in fifth stays there fine, drop a cog of go to 80mph plus [testing purposes officer] and it scuttles down to 70C ish, think stat is failing "safe".

Which is a fine way of enforcing the national limit!!!!

Have seen a youtube video where guy changed it from underneath as well.........

Car is going into the garage next week to get the thermostat changed! Just started the car up and the fans were going anyone know why that would happen to an engine that is cold or will that be due to my thermostat being open too?

Got the car into the garage yesterday morning with a wee list of things to be done first of all is to get the thermostat replaced then get the awful fuel smell sorted also hit a pot hole the other day resulting in a knocking noise coming from the rear passenger side wheel also the airbag light has been on since last time it was in since the clutch was replaced fingers crossed its not going to break the bank:sadlike:

Get vcds on the airbag problem and see if you can reset it or if the controller has gone west.

Where is the fuel smell coming from? My old car randomly started leaking fuel at the fuel filter.

Not to sure its just when i'm sitting in traffic there is a really strong smell of fuel its been getting worse since I bought the car in September every time I drove it last week I kept on getting really bad headaches from it I told the garage to check the fuel filter as that is probably the cheapest fix

    How did you get on?

  25. My 2.5 is a 2000, Murrays444, fuel pipes are getting a bit fragile. Had to repair the front end of the pipe as it had a pinhole under one of the rubbers, (10mm fuel pipe and clips from Pirtek) only cost a few quid, much better than £200 for new pipes)

Take it back to the garage in the morning and tell them they must have broke it, as it wasn't like that prior to giving it to them, you may get it fixed as a freebie. No harm in trying mate, in the meantime I'd disconnect the battery, as long as that doesn't cause any more problem's. :sadlike:
